The Opportunity

WSDOT is currently seeking two motivated and hard-working individuals to join the Maintenance Crews in Spokane, WA. The Highway Maintenance Worker 3 will need to be able to hit the ground running and lead an experienced team of Maintenance professionals responsible for performing a variety of highway, roadside, infrastructure, and right-of-way maintenance work to ensure the safe and efficient movement of goods, services, and people. These experienced technicians will lead by example and have a personal commitment to safety while coordinating daily work activities such as heavy equipment operations, providing roadway maintenance for sub-sections of highways, and performing snow and ice removal functions. One position will lead the region's Pavement Preservation Crew (PPC), and the second position will lead a crew in delivering the area's Integrated Roadside Vegetation Management (IRVM) Program.

What to Expect

This recruitment is being used to fill two HMW3 positions, one will lead the PPC and the second position will lead the IRVM crew. These positions work a 4/10 schedule, with opportunity for overtime. The HMW3- PPC Lead position requires out of town work throughout the summer season. Listed below are the duties for both positions. Percentage of time spent on each responsibility will vary depending on the specific position.

Among the varied range of responsibilities held within this role, the Highway Maintenance Worker 3 will:
  • As the PPC Lead/IRVM lead, prioritize, plan, schedule, and budget maintenance priorities of respective crews and state highways within area of responsibility.
  • Cultivate shared vision, values, transparency and accountability.
  • Lead and perform general roadway maintenance activities such as:
  • Asphalt and concrete pavement maintenance and repair.
  • Drainage maintenance including catch basins, sedimentation facilities, and ditches.
  • Erosion and slide repair.
  • Sign maintenance and repair.
  • Guardrail, fence, and impact attenuator installation and repair.
  • Conduct snow and ice control.
  • Design, set up, and perform traffic control for all work operations, respond to emergency situations.
  • Prioritize, plan, and schedule personnel and equipment.
  • Prepare and complete third-party damage estimates and document work completion.
  • Maintain accurate records and reports for personnel, equipment, inventory, and materials in computerized systems.
  • Perform maintenance and minor repair on equipment and hand tools.
  • Operate and train others on Class A, B, and C CDL equipment.
  • Assist in the safe cleanup and removal of unlawful dwellings.
  • Be subject to contingency scheduling, overtime on short notice, and emergency call-outs, and stand-by.
  • Steward safety programs by knowing and enforcing the established WSDOT/WAC safety policies and procedures; conduct safety meetings.
Qualifications

To be considered for this opportunity, the following are required:
  • Two (2) years of experience in roadway maintenance, bridge construction, heavy equipment operation, or equivalent experience.
  • Commercial Driver License Class A (without restrictions) with endorsement N and without air brakes restriction.
  • A valid medical certificate.
  • WSDA Pesticide Operator License or ability to obtain within the first six months of employment.
  • First Aid Certification or ability to obtain within the first six months of employment.
  • Flagger Certification or ability to obtain within the first six months of employment.
  • Experience providing outstanding customer service.
  • Experience adhering to safety policies and diligence in performing work in a safe manner.
  • Experience in working independently and prioritizing workload, with the ability to handle multiple assignments.
  • Ability to traverse rough, steep terrain.
  • Ability to report in service to assigned duty station within 45 minutes of an after-hours call.
  • Ability to work nights, weekends, holidays, and perform emergency call-outs/stand-by.
  • The ability to communicate effectively with diverse groups utilizing oral, written, and electronic communication methods.
It is preferred that qualified candidates also have:
  • High school diploma, GED, or equivalent.
  • Three (3) years of experience at WSDOT performing highway maintenance, bridge maintenance/construction, or related work.
  • Experience leading and/or supervising crews, providing clear direction, and making good decisions in stressful conditions
  • Experience performing traffic control per MUTCD including planning, setting signs and cones or barrels, and flagging.
Important Notes
  • This recruitment is being used to fill two positions, HMW3 -PPC Lead and HMW3 -IRVM Lead.
  • The HMW3- PPC Lead position requires out of town work throughout the season.
  • This recruitment may also be used to fill additional positions per business needs.
