Responsibilities

Prepares routine and STAT microscopic slides from all tissue removed during surgery procedures that will be interpreted by the Pathologists in the diagnosis of disease. Responsible for organizing work load as assigned. Displays professional, safe conduct in all interactions. Maintains positive working relationships with staff, other departments, physicians and peers.

Receives, accessions and Assists with grossing of tissue specimens from Surgery, doctor's offices, , Endoscopy, outside hospitals, and contract accounts
Prepares STAT frozen sections for the Pathologist for immediate diagnosis while the patient is still on the operating table so that the surgeon can determine the extent of the surgical procedure. Complete accessioning, cutting, and staining within a 10 minute time limit on STAT frozen sections
Histologically processes tissue, embeds using appropriate orientation depending on type of tissue, sections per protocol, stains, coverslips, reviews for completion, and Delivers finished slides to the Pathologist for interpretation
Performs multiple special stains necessary to assist in or confirm diagnosis
Processes autopsy material and Prepares teaching sets
Performs preventive maintenance and daily quality assurance on all equipment
Adheres to all regulatory requirements

Qualifications

Required Education and Experience

Opt 1: Successful completion of an accredited Histotechnician or Histotechnologist program

Opt 2: HS and 60 college/university semester hrs, with a combination of 12 hrs biology and chemistry (must include both) AND one year full time acceptable experience in a histopathology laboratory within the last 5 years including fixation, embedding, microtomy, processing and staining.

Opt 3: Associates degree with a combination of 12 hrs biology and chemistry (must include both) AND one year full time acceptable experience in a histopathology laboratory within the last 5 years including fixation, embedding, microtomy, processing and staining.

Opt 4: Will consider candidates with High School diploma and two or more years of experience in all areas of routine histology in lieu of academic credit/degree and/or certification.

Required Licensure and Certifications

None

Preferred Education and Certifications

Associate degree and successful completion of an accredited Histotechnician program, AND/OR

Histotechnician certification, HT, by American Society of Clinical Pathology

Required Minimum Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and Training

Detail-oriented with the ability to multitask and prioritize duties.
