Histology Technician

Job Summary

Receives, processes, embeds, cuts, and stains specimens for histology. Exercises independent judgment in the performance of assigned laboratory tasks. Works with minimal supervision.

1. Responsible for recycling solvents and following all policies and procedures for such.
2. Accessions biopsy specimens into PowerPath or other corporate computer systems with appropriate billing information and assignment.
3. Changes solvent solutions and prepares tissue processors for operation. Loads cassettes into processor.
4. Embeds tissue and prepares tissue blocks for cutting, if required.
5. Cleans and changes staining solutions for the Hemotoxylin and Eosin stainer and other stainers as required.
6. Stains and coverslips completed slides.
7. Assists with slide distribution to pathologists, hospitals and clients.
8. Trains in tissue microtomy and microtome maintenance, if required.
9. Maintains daily logs on quality control for procedures performed.
10. Performs general cleaning and maintenance of lab and equipment including removal of wax and solvents with appropriate documentation.
11. Monitors materials and supplies weekly for inventory purposes.
12. Able to use computerized systems according to standard protocol.

Minimum Qualifications

MINIMUM EDUCATION:
Must meet one of the following:
• High school diploma or equivalent.
• Associate's Degree in relevant field.
• Bachelor's Degree in relevant field.

MINIMUM EXPERIENCE:
Must meet one of the following relevant experience requirements:
• With High School Diploma, must have three (3) years relevant experience.
• With High School Diploma, must have one (1) year Lab Assistant experience at TriCore.
• With Associate's Degree, must have two (2) years relevant experience outside TriCore.
• With Bachelor's Degree, no experience required.

OTHER REQUIREMENTS:
• Must be able to lift 50 pounds regularly in the course of their workday.
• Must be deemed medically fit for a respirator.

PREFERENCES:
• Completion of approved histology program or equivalent clinical laboratory training
• Two years of college to include a concentration in relevant laboratory experience.
