POSITION SUMMARY
To be fully engaged in providing Quality/No Harm, Customer Experience, and Stewardship by performing laboratory preparation of tissue specimens for microscopic examination by the pathologists which may include but is not limited to gross assist, frozen sections, processing, embedding, and staining (routine, special and immunohistochemistry). Prepares tissue specimens and performs histological procedures.

PRIMARY ACCOUNTABILITIES
1. Accurately embed tissue according to industry standards
2. Produce high-quality tissue sections in an expedient and consistent manner
3. Prepare solutions and reagents for special stain procedures
4. Obtain and validate tissue used in special stains
5. Perform all special stain procedures
6. May prepare solutions and reagents for immunohistochemistry procedures
7. Perform routine, special, and immunohistochemistry staining
8. Maintain accurate patient identification throughout all workflows
9. Perform daily quality control of slides for overall quality of preparation, including but not limited to staining intensity and artifacts
10. Maintain daily quality control logs and other required documentation
11. Maintain equipment and instruments in good operating conditions; acknowledge malfunctions, troubleshoot, and notify supervisor

Qualifications:

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Education: High school diploma or equivalent
Licensure: Florida HTL
Certification: HT or HTL ASCP
Work Experience: One year laboratory related work experience
Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:

  • Willing and able to work with biohazardous/toxic materials following OSHA guidelines
  • Must have strong interpersonal skills
  • Demonstrated organizational skills
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Ability to work with computers and can demonstrate basic computer skills
  • Must be able to multi-task and work in a fast-paced environment
  • Knowledge of quality assurance and quality control procedures
  • Must be able to work weekends and take call (30-minute response time required) when needed


PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Visual acuity and manual dexterity to perform clinical/technical tasks
  • Must pass color blindness test
  • Must be able to sit for extended periods of time (2-3 hours)
  • Must be able to sit and operate a computer
