DESCRIPTION

This role supports the Dermatopathology Lab within the Department of Dermatology. The lab provides a collaborative and collegial environment in a tertiary referral center, where histotechnologists are exposed to all aspects of dermatopathology, including complex immunohistochemistry, molecular testing, grossing, embedding, and cutting. Located adjacent to the dermatology clinic, the lab handles a busy consultative and outreach service, offering opportunities to develop and validate new antibodies and support clinical and research advancements. Histotechnologists work directly with dermatopathologists, gaining valuable experience in clinical workflows while providing essential support to our care teams, contributing to impactful care delivery.

Under the direction of the Supervisor, the Histotechnologist performs a variety of histological procedures in accordance with CLIA requirements. This includes tissue processing, embedding, and staining samples using various histological techniques. The Histotechnologist handles specimen intake and accessioning of skin biopsies and other specimens, ensuring accurate data entry into the laboratory information system. Additionally, they prepare tissue samples for light microscopy by grossing, processing, embedding, and sectioning for diagnostic and research purposes.

Key responsibilities include performing H&E stains, histochemical special stains, and immunohistochemistry procedures according to laboratory protocols. The Histotechnologist operates and maintains histological equipment, ensuring preventive maintenance is completed per manufacturer and laboratory guidelines. Quality control is essential, with adherence to laboratory standards and regulatory requirements. The position also involves assisting with supply management, inventory control, and proper storage and disposal of materials. The Histotechnologist also manages the filing and retrieval of slides and FFPE blocks while gathering data for reports as needed.

Depending on the experience of selected candidates, this position will be hired at the Histotechnologist I or Histotechnologist II level.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
  • A Bachelor's degree in a related field.
  • One to two years or more of experience as a histologist within a pathology laboratory or a graduate of an accredited histotechnology program.
  • At least two to three years' experience as a histologist within a pathology laboratory required to be considered at the Histotechnologist II level.
  • Demonstrated experience performing accession with proper data entry from pathology intake forms.
  • Demonstrated experience orienting and processing human tissue and skin biopsies.
  • Proven experience processing tissues and cells, cut sections, and performing histological staining procedures.
  • Sufficient knowledge of skin histology, histochemistry and immunohistochemistry are necessary to successfully perform the duties assigned to the position.
  • Proficient knowledge and experience working with computers, including software such as Excel and Microsoft Office, as well as the ability to learn utilization of laboratory information systems.
  • Strong attention to detail and organization, with extensive experience in organizing, calculating, and analyzing data to maintain accurate records.
  • Highly conscientious in adhering to laboratory quality control practices.
  • Excellent communication skills (verbal and written) needed to interact professionally and effectively in the work environment, as well as effectively and accurately document research procedures.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Histotechnician or Histotechnology certification by A.S.C.P. with +/- 60 semester units of biological science.
  • Microtomy, sectioning and embedding proficiency.
  • Knowledge of UCSD Environmental Health and Safety requirements.
SPECIAL CONDITIONS
  • Must be able to work all shifts, week-ends, overtime, and at various locations as necessary in accordance with operational needs.

Pay Transparency Act

Annual Full Pay Range: $66,565 - $82,727 (will be prorated if the appointment percentage is less than 100%)

Hourly Equivalent: $31.88 - $39.62

The Annual Full Pay Range may be broader than what the University anticipates to pay for this position, based on internal equity, budget, and collective bargaining agreements (when applicable).
