Are you looking to be part of a dynamic team that protects the environment? The Department of Fish and Wildlife's Hot Creek Hatchery (HCH) is seeking a motivated individual to work as a Fish and Wildlife Technician located in Mammoth Lakes California. Under the general supervision of the Fish Hatchery Manager I incumbent will perform the skilled/semiskilled work at Hot Creek Hatchery in such tasks as: spawn fish, care for and transfer eggs, and incubate and hatch eggs; care for fry, prepare feed for and feed fish, and clean troughs and rearing ponds; treat fish for disease, inventory fish, load fish for transport, and transport fish; maintain facilities and equipment; monitor fish health and water quality; record information; and operate various vehicles, equipment, and tools. Assists with implementation of best practice when spawning, rearing, and distributing fish.

Working Conditions
Time spent on each duty or task varies from season to season and depends upon hatercy projects and/or programs. This facility is located at 7,100 feet in elevation and experiences seasonal snow and extreme weather conditions i.e., -20F with high winds. May be assigned to work overtime, weekends, holidays and perform standby duties.
This position requires the employee to reside in State-Owned Housing at Hot Creek Hatchery.

Ability to elevate 40 pounds. The ability to handle 50 pound feed and salt bags. Willingness to work in and around water. Negotiate 12 inch catwalks over open water. Climb in and out of 4 feet deep water-filled raceways. Work in all weather conditions - wind, rain, snow, extreme heat, cold and direct sunlight. The ability to work for prolonged periods of time in 57-60 degree Fahrenheit water. Willingness to perform manual labor and assist other hatchery employees as necessary or required.

Desirable Qualifications In addition to evaluating each candidate's relative ability, as demonstrated by quality and breadth of experience, the following factors will provide the basis for competitively evaluating each candidate:
Possess a valid Driver's License with the ability to upgrade to a California Class A or B within a year of appointment, which is a commercial license with proper endorsements to operate and maintain commercial planting vehicles. Education equivalent to completion of the 12th grade.
SKILL TO: Operate - forklift, utility vehicle, tractor, mechanical pond crowder's, pallet jack, fish pump, stand-by generators. Open and close various types of valves, climb steep banks when necessary. Work near waters with uneven terrain and unpredictable flows. Climb ladders. Work alone when assigned at the hatchery and while at a remote fish planting location. Operate various types of unusual support equipment used in the operation of the hatchery.
Special Personal Characteristics: Aptitude for fish and wildlife conservation work, construction, repair, and maintenance work; willingness to live and work throughout the State, and work unusual hours and on Saturdays, Sundays, and holidays; willingness to do heavy manual labor, work in adverse weather conditions, and to wear a prescribed uniform; keenness of observation; tact; and reliability.
Interpersonal Skills: Communicate effectively; follow oral and written instructions; prepare simple reports and maintain simple records; establish and maintain cooperative relations with those contacted in the work; analyze situations and take effective action; perform a variety of skilled/semiskilled mechanical and construction work and direct the work of seasonal staff.
