Established in 1970, SVCC is one of the 23 colleges in the Virginia Community College System. The Christanna Campus near Alberta and the John H. Daniel Campus near Keysville serve ten counties and one city - the largest community college service region in the state. In 1985, SVCC opened the Southside Virginia Education Center. The college is accredited by the Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools to award Associate degrees. SVCC is dedicated to the belief that all citizens should be given an opportunity to acquire an educational foundation which develops and extends their skills and knowledge. SVCC is located in a rural setting of rolling hills, pine and hardwood forests, and farmland. There is easy access to nearby metropolitan Richmond, Virginia, the state’s capital, as well as Raleigh, North Carolina, and Lynchburg, Virginia. The area is famous for its two lakes, Gaston and Kerr, and a multitude of state and national parks which offer recreational opportunities such as fishing, boating, skiing, jet-skiing, hiking, horseback riding, picnics, and relaxation. The area also offers sports arenas for baseball, softball, soccer and beautiful golf courses. There are cultural activities including various theaters and arts councils offering concerts, plays, and live entertainment, and there are many local festivals held throughout the year.

Southside Virginia Community College is currently accepting applications for a Housekeeper I, day shift (however the college may change shift hours if needed for agency operations). This position is located on the Alberta, VA campus. The successful candidate must be committed to the mission of the college and maintain a clean, sanitary and safe environment for students, faculty, staff and visitors.

Some of the responsibilities of this position include but are not limited to:

  • Keeps inside buildings and outside grounds areas neat and clean
  • Performs housekeeping duties such as cleaning classrooms and restrooms; sweep, damp mop, clean up spills and empty trash
  • Strip, seal, wash and buff floors as assigned
  • Coordinating and assisting with set up of equipment and furniture for events or as needed
  • Responsible for making making periodic rounds of the building and parking lots to assure the safety of students, faculty, staff and security of equipment. Report any problems to the Buildings & Grounds Supervisor
  • Assist students, staff, faculty and visitors as needed
  • Assist with the evacuation of the building in case of an emergency and assist with getting help for medical and security emergencies
  • Requires occasional weekend and night shifts and alternate schedule during special events or if needed for agency operations
  • May on occasion be responsible for distributing campus mail and delivering outgoing mail to local Post Office
  • Performs preventive maintenance and monitor mechanical systems during shift and reports any problems to the Buildings and Grounds Supervisor
  • Locks and unlock all doors before and after students leave. Turn on and off all lights and unused equipment


Special Assignments
May be required to perform other duties as assigned. May be required to assist the agency or state government generally in the event of an emergency declaration by the Governor.
KSA's/Required Qualifications
  • Experience in performance of cleaning tasks, floor care, restroom cleaning, and general custodial care
  • Knowledge of cleaning methods and use of cleaning chemicals and supplies and of safety practices as related to the work
  • Ability to perform a variety of cleaning tasks, lift and move heavy objects up to 50 lbs.,
  • Ability to operate manual and power equipment
  • Ability to deliver exceptional customer service
  • Ability to read and understand product labels, handling instructions, user manuals, etc
  • Ability to work without close supervision
  • Ability to read and understand simple instructions
  • Ability to operate computers and use basic software such as e-mail, time reporting, and work order applications
  • Must possess and maintain a valid Virginia driver’s license
