Position Summary
The University at Buffalo School of Law invites applications for a Housing Law Supervising Attorney position in the Civil Rights & Transparency Clinic in the practice areas of housing law and related issues, to commence on or about July 2024.

The successful candidate will co-supervise a clinic focused on housing law, eviction defense, fair housing, and related civil justice issues alongside a law school faculty member. This position offers attorneys the opportunity to engage in litigation and related housing-justice advocacy with the goal of providing safe, affordable, and fair housing for all people regardless of their race, ethnicity, disability status, or other protected class status.

The Supervising Attorney will have primary responsibility for a project to provide legal services to people facing eviction and related housing issues. The successful candidate will have significant latitude to shape the litigation docket and related legal projects, in coordination with the clinic's director.

The Supervising Attorney's duties will include:
  • Supervising second- and-third-year law students' work on client matters;
  • Advising and representing clients facing eviction and related housing issues; and
  • Conducting outreach in Western New York and surrounding regions to build the clinic's network in the community and with other legal services nonprofits.

The Supervising Attorney will be primarily responsible for covering these matters during the summer and inter-semester breaks, with assistance from law students.

The Supervising Attorney will be integrated into the Clinical Legal Education program and will be welcome to participate in the vibrant intellectual life of the School of Law, including faculty workshops, academic conferences, and other events. If the Supervising Attorney is not interested in pursuing a career in clinical teaching they will be provided preparation and support to continue their career at public interest organizations, private law firms, in-house positions, or other settings.

This position is a 12-month appointment with the possibility of renewal up to a total of three years, with the possibility of additional renewal contingent on funding. The Supervising Attorney will be joining a clinical program whose mission is to deliver access to justice while teaching UB law students to be excellent, ethical, and engaged lawyers. The School of Law has a deep and longstanding commitment to serving clients and the broader public in Western New York and beyond. The Supervising Attorney will have the unique opportunity to deliver on that commitment to support the vitally important work of building a pipeline of student attorneys trained in housing law-matters and strengthen our region's response to the eviction crisis.
