Job Summary

The Human Resources Manager is responsible for managing our organization's human resources activities including recruiting and hiring, orientation, and performance management, along with general administrative tasks that support business initiatives and strategic objectives. The Human Resources Manager assumes overall responsibility for ensuring all human resource activities are in alignment with policies and procedures, leading initiatives related to organizational learning and development, execution of facility maintenance and improvements and supporting administrative activities to ensure business continuity.

As a member of the management team, the Human Resources Manager contributes to the development and furtherance of our organizational policy and strategic plans.

Responsibilities*
  • Manage the human resource function, including recruitment and hiring processes, training, performance management, leaves of absence (FMLA, maternity, parental etc), and policy adherence, development, and implementation. Manage onboarding and orientation, staff development training and team events, wellness, team building and organizational culture.
  • Oversee internal communications and organizational learning utilizing in person and digital platforms (email, zoom, staff intranet). Develop and coordinate training opportunities to ensure that the organization has the necessary skills to deliver its strategic objectives and support adoption processes.
  • Develop, track, and report on key performance indicators (KPI) and outcomes including recruitment initiatives, hires and terminations, and staff profiles, among others. Ensure optimal performance in all areas related to human resources.
  • Recommend and execute activities to support new approaches to improve efficiency, service, diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility. Act as lead on the completion of human resource projects, applying continuous improvement techniques and models to support the adoption of strategic and business improvements.
  • Oversee all approved travel, hosting, and event activities, ensuring they are executed timely and effectively, and within budget. Contribute to and implement policies and procedures that meet organizational needs and are in alignment with U-M systems and policy
  • Manage the organization's physical hardware (computers, peripherals, zoom technology) and access to software systems (U-M Sponsored Accounts and specific organizationally managed software), ensuring the tools and systems are being used effectively, and policies and procedures for managing them are implemented and maintained. Activities include managing computer maintenance and replacement and all onsite physical hardware such as zoom rooms and hot desks.
  • Manage the organization's facilities resources, ensuring they are fit for purpose, being used effectively, and policies and procedures are developed and implemented. Activities include management and maintenance of office equipment, building space, utilities, janitorial, phones and security (including emergency preparedness protocols).
  • Manage the human resources team. Continually build and enhance communication, teamwork, professional development, and core skills among the team.
  • Contribute to the planning, implementation, and evaluation of the long-term strategic business plan, including budgeting and resource management.
  • Other contributions commensurate with level and experience as required.

Required Qualifications*
  • Bachelor's degree in human resources, organization learning or a related field
  • Competent user of most Office products and ability to quickly learn new software programs including accounting and financial systems
  • Analytical skills, and strong attention to detail
  • Provide excellent customer service; exercise outstanding independent judgement with the ability to multi-task and manage competing priorities and deadlines
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently, exercising good decision-making skills, as well as the ability to function as a team player
  • Must possess excellent written and oral communication skills, with high attention to detail, and ability to follow-through on tasks until completion
  • Leadership, training, and mentoring skills with demonstrated ability to consistently give constructive critical feedback
  • Progressive professional experience in human resources
  • Experience managing a team
  • Considerable knowledge of a broad range of human resource related employment laws and regulations
  • Demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion, with recognition of the value that different perspectives bring to our organization and our work
  • Experience leading HR functions including payroll, recruitment, and organizational learning and development
  • Metrics/dashboard reporting
  • Experience planning and managing events

Desired Qualifications*
  • Master's degree in human resources, organizational learning or a related field
  • Familiarity with University of Michigan policies and procedures
  • Experience with UM systems including, M-Reports, M-Pathways, Business Objects

Work Locations

Michigan Language Assessment is seeking candidates located in or around Ann Arbor and supports a fully remote work from home schedule with occasionally scheduled in person activities.

Upon request, qualified candidates outside of the Ann Arbor commuting area may be considered.
