The University of Virginia's Facilities Management, Health System Physical Plant (HSPP), has an opening for an HVAC professional. The position will be filled either as an HVAC Mechanic or HVAC Senior Assistant level depending on the credentials and experience of the finalist selected.

HVAC Senior Assistants support HVAC Mechanics with HVAC repairs and works independently as appropriate, cleans job sites, trains on more advanced installations and emergency repairs, and follows all customer service and safety protocols. A high school diploma is required with a minimum of four years of related experience with HVAC installations and repair. The incumbent hired at this level will be considered for promotion once they have attained the required experience and licensure for the next level. A valid driver's license, with a positive points balance is also required.

HVAC Mechanics perform journey level installation, repair, and maintenance on a variety of package and central heating, ventilation, and air conditioning systems. Other duties include preventative maintenance; servicing, overhauling, and maintaining a variety of large central units; and determining equipment needs. HVAC Mechanics receive job assignments from a supervisor however most work is performed with little supervision.

HVAC Senior Assistant Duties Include:
  • Perform HVAC repairs, along with diagnostic and preventative maintenance on a variety of air conditioning units, ventilation equipment, and temperature and humidity controls, and refrigeration equipment.
  • Develop an increasing knowledge of types of material and equipment used for the various utility systems involved in University projects.
  • Maintain accurate records on time tickets, job requests, and work orders.
  • Determine material and equipment for specific jobs, as well as initiate purchase orders.
  • Maintain compliance with OSHA, federal, state, and local regulations. Use personal safety equipment as instructed, and act in accordance with safety guidelines.
  • Meet with and respond to customer requests on work status in coordination with supervisor.
  • Experience working in a Healthcare Facility is preferred.
HVAC Mechanic Duties Include :
  • Perform HVAC installation and repairs, along with diagnostic and preventative maintenance on a variety of air conditioning units, ventilation equipment, and temperature and humidity controls, and refrigeration equipment.
  • Specify, estimate, and install equipment, refrigeration, and systems in accordance with applicable standards and requirements.
  • Respond to emergency requests.
  • Inform customers of job status, reasons for and duration of expected delays, as well as refer customers to the supervisor when appropriate.
  • Perform all work in accordance with safety rules and procedures, such as OSHA, federal, state, and local regulations, the National Electrical Code, and The Joint Commission.
  • Assist other trades and become familiar with various equipment and sequence of operation.
  • Perform miscellaneous duties such as snow and ice removal, as assigned by the supervisor.
  • Experience working in a Healthcare Facility is preferred.
Minimum Requirements:
  • Education: High school diploma or equivalent
  • Experience: Four years of experience.
  • Licensure: Journeyman or higher HVAC license to be considered for the HVAC Mechanic level. Valid Driver's license, with positive points balance.
Physical Demands: Employee will be required to crawl, kneel, squat, bend and twist in order to perform their work. Employee must travel around job sites. Employee will work with materials of different weights and perform repetitive motions.

Compensation:
  • HVAC Senior Assistant: $21.00 to $25.00 per hour ($43,680 - $52,000 Annually).
  • HVAC Mechanic: $24.00 - $29.00 ($49,920 - $60,320 annually).
