Description

Performs a wide variety of engineering and maintenance functions specifically related to preventive and corrective maintenance of all hospital heating, ventilation, and air conditioning systems, and other Hospital equipment within the scope of duties as outlined by the Engineering and Maintenance policies and procedures. Will be required to perform other maintenance functions such as carpentry, electrical, painting, and mechanical as necessary. Will assist Environmental Services Manager in development of policies and procedures related to hospital HVAC systems.

  • Responsible to: Director, Plant Operations
  • Interrelationships: Works closely with other hospital employees as required in the performance of duties.
  • Workers Supervised: None
  • Observes and actively participates in the safety lockout procedure.
  • Selects the most appropriate tool for the job and maintains all tools in proper and safe condition.
  • Uses all tools properly, keeping in mind safety to self and others.
  • Completes electrical safety inspections as trained, in the absence of the electrician, on all new or returned equipment, prior to its use.
  • Insures that all electrical and mechanical equipment in use, meets safety standards and applicable codes as well as satisfying other Regulatory Agencies.
  • Performs corrective and preventative maintenance on all equipment as assigned and insures that this equipment functions as specified by the manufacturers.
  • Maintains all heating, ventilation and air conditioning systems, exhaust systems and refrigeration equipment as well as maintains records, which give a repair history for this equipment. This includes tracking all refrigeration gases that fall under the EPA guidelines.
  • Maintains all water systems, gas systems, boilers, fire systems and sewer systems as well as maintains records which give a repair history for this equipment.
  • Participates in the evaluation of any mechanical, electrical, or refrigeration equipment or component, which enters the hospital.
  • Monitors and assists in the installation of all equipment installed in this facility by others such as vendors and contractors.
  • Completes carpentry, electrical and mechanical repairs as required and is responsible to fill the shifts for the electrician and plumber during their absence.
  • Completes or assists others with maintenance functions such as electrical, carpentry or plumbing repairs.
  • Reads and interprets blue prints, schematics and other drawings and maintains these for future reference.\\
  • Recognizes situations when more advanced technical assistance is needed and seeks this assistance.
  • Prioritizes work orders, so that the greatest patient care needs are met first, followed by preventative maintenance, then routine or low priority work.
  • Completes work orders in a timely fashion, based on priority.
  • May be required to work other shifts as needed.
  • Must be familiar with building control systems.


Requirements

  • High School Diploma or equivalent required.
  • Must be able to respond within 30 minutes for on call duties.
  • Journeyman level HVAC, Mechanic or Plumber; license preferred, not required.
  • Must be Certified and approved by EPA in Refrigerant Recovery and Recycling of equipment.
  • Must have knowledge of State and Local codes and standards as it pertains to HVAC equipment operations.
  • Must have ability to adhere closely to established standards and procedures specified for proper operation of all equipment.
  • Must have ability to perceive three-dimensional forms when reading blueprints or installing and maintaining machinery.
  • Must have ability to collect and interpret data from log books and repair records.
  • Must have ability to communicate verbally and in writing in order to understand technical language and manuals used to install and maintain machinery and equipment.
  • Must have the ability to operate the boiler room and HVAC systems.
  • Must have the ability to work occasional swing shifts.
  • Must be able to respond to calls within 30 minutes when placed on-call.
  • Must have basic computer skills and the ability to operate office machinery.
