Based on job duties, this position is designated as telework eligible on a hybrid basis (i.e., working at least 3 days per week in the office); the selected applicant must complete the initial training period prior to being eligible to telework. Job Duties

In the Division of Engineering, Office of Structural Engineering (OSE) acts as a bridge rating & analysis staff specialist (i.e., develops & evaluates plans & criteria for variety of projects & activities to be carried out by others; assesses feasibility & soundness of proposed engineering designs, evaluation tests, products or equipment when necessary data is insufficient or confirmation by testing is advisable). Performs structural calculations & computer analysis using specialized engineering programs (e.g., AASHTOWare, Bridge Rating program, MDX software, Midas-Civil program). Writes reports & correspondence documenting engineering decisions & recommendations. Collects data for the development of new policies & procedures. Reviews plan submittals for conformity with departments manuals, policies & specifications by applying engineering principles to ensure adequacy & public safety. Resolves problems, answers questions, directs engineering/technical activities on behalf of supervisor, plans & coordinates work, assists in development of section policy, budget preparation &/or long range planning; advises offices, consulting firms, Federal Highway Administration, local public agencies & others with projects/problems in areas of bridge rating & design. Signs plans &/or other engineering documents as registered professional engineer & conducts quality assurance reviews.

Performs bridge analysis of overload permit applications using computers & related software (e.g., ProMiles); reviews the analysis results & makes recommendations to the Office of Special Hauling Permits for the safe travel of overload vehicles on bridges in Ohio; collects bridge data & performs studies of possible damages associated with movement of overloaded vehicles; interprets plans to minimize chances of accidents, conflicts & delays.

Assists in conducting statewide seminars & personnel training sessions; represents the ODOT & OSE at meetings, conferences, & seminars; conducts quality assurance reviews of Districts & Consultants; coordinates, & directs research activities; reviews research reports; acts as research liaison on behalf of the OSE; performs o ther assignments as requested by the Bridge Engineer or Structure Rating Engineer (e.g., produces reports & run queries, answers correspondence, answers inquiries from internal & external customers).

Qualifications
Licensed as registered professional engineer by Ohio State Board of Registration for Professional Engineers & Surveyors; 12 mos. exp. as Transportation Engineer 2, 85642; if assigned to operate a state vehicle to travel to & inspect project sites, must possess valid driver's license.

-Or licensed as registered professional engineer by Ohio State Board of Registration for Professional Engineers & Surveyors; 12 mos. exp. as group or project leader providing work direction & training to engineering technicians &/or lower-level engineers or 12 mos. exp. in conducting engineering related research (i.e., conducting engineering related research only applies to staff specialist positions); if assigned to operate a state vehicle to travel to & inspect project sites, must possess valid driver's license.
