Transportation Engineer 4 - Office of Roadway Engineering - PN 20049601

Based on job duties, this position is designated as telework eligible on a hybrid basis (i.e., working at least 3 days per week in the office); the selected applicant must complete the initial training period prior to being eligible to telework. All requests to telework are reviewed and must be approved by ODOTs Chief Human Resources Officer

Job Duties

In the Office of Roadway Engineering, acts as staff specialist in Preliminary Engineering Design (i.e., develops engineering policies & plans projects concerned with unique or controversial problems which have significant impact on major organizational programs, keeps abreast of new scientific methods & developments affecting department & recommends changes in emphasis of programs or new programs warranted, implements departmental policies & programs in administration of contracts involving multiple complex projects, programs & directives & develops &/or revises policies & directives based on field observation & testing). Reviews & approves designs proposed for all construction (e.g., four-lane rehabilitation, new construction, bridge replacement, roadway relocation) submitted by District Engineers, consulting engineers, & local governments for assigned areas. Performs hydraulic & structural design calculations for review purposes using a computer & related software (e.g., computer-aided design & drafting (CADD) &/or drafting tools). Sign plans &/or other engineering documents as registered professional engineer & conducts quality assurance reviews. Attends Value Engineering workshops & assists with creating design concepts & reports. Coordinates design work with assigned areas.

Uses a computer & related software (e.g., CADD, MS Office suite) to update standards, specifications, &/or manuals for geometrics, guardrail & traffic barriers. Develops portions of Location & Design Manual, Volume One regarding roadside safety & Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA); develops portions of roadway standard drawings based on American Association of State Highway Transportation Officials (AASHTO), American Society of Testing Materials (ASTM), & Manual for Assessing Safety Hardware (MASH) standards. Reviews plans for Roadside Safety features (e.g., barrier, rumble strips, landscaping aspects); conducts field inspections; assists with in-service performance evaluations of roadside hardware as developed; collects data, provides court testimony in litigation cases regarding historical standards & serves on internal & external committees; stays abreast of new scientific methods, developments, & technologies affecting the department & recommends changes. Serves as liaison between Central Office & District regarding standards, specifications &/or manuals; advises consulting firms, Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) & local public agencies regarding projects/problems in assigned area of expertise; serves as liaison with product manufacturers & suppliers; reviews product literature. Attends conferences or seminars as office representative; conducts training related to roadside safety products & Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) compliance.

Qualifications
Licensed as registered professional engineer by Ohio State Board of Registration for Professional Engineers & Surveyors; 12 mos. exp. as Transportation Engineer 3, 85643; if assigned to operate a state vehicle to travel to & inspect project sites, must possess valid driver's license.

-Or licensed as registered professional engineer by Ohio State Board of Registration for Professional Engineers & Surveyors; 2 yrs. exp. as group or project leader or supervisor providing work direction & training to employees engaged in engineering projects or 2 yrs. exp. in managing engineering research projects (i.e., managing research projects applies only to staff specialist positions); if assigned to operate a state vehicle to travel to & inspect project sites, must possess valid driver's license.
