HDR is looking for a Civil / Water Resources Engineer to join our North Carolina Hydropower team and our national Hydropower Practice. This individual will support and manage the development and execution of pumped storage conventional hydropower projects, dam safety assessments/inspections, and dam rehabilitations and modifications.

Our national Hydropower Practice design and regulatory team offers core services such as mechanical, electrical, structural, geotechnical and site civil engineering expertise in addition to environmental scientists and regulatory specialists. Hydropower generation is recognized as a critical and renewable component of the US energy portfolio. This team provides engineering consulting services to electric utilities and independent power producers located across the U.S. and Canada.

This position will have the opportunity to support or manage a variety of projects involving feasibility studies for new pumped storage hydropower projects as well as civil related modifications and upgrades at existing conventional hydropower and pumped storage facilities. Typical projects involve siting, project component layout, cost estimating, and design of new greenfield facilities (e.g. pumped storage projects, power at existing non-powered dams) as well as expansion or dam safety modifications of existing hydropower generating facilities. This individual must be a self-starter with excellent communication skills and the ability to participate in multiple projects at a time while seeking project leadership opportunities. On a day-to-day basis, this individual will be expected to:

  • Provide technical leadership and oversight for projects involving analysis, design, and construction of dam safety improvements for embankment and concrete dams
  • Serve as the primary point of contact with clients for periodic project status updates, project review meetings, briefings, presentations, etc.
  • Interface with dam safety and other regulatory agencies on behalf of clients to gain approval of project analysis and design documents
  • Manage, plan, and coordinate geotechnical engineering analysis and design projects
  • Lead and mentor junior engineers on the project team
  • Support marketing and business development initiatives


Preferred Qualifications:

  • A minimum of 3 years experience of relevant market sector project execution
  • Experience in site development and the design of water retaining structures and water conveyance features
  • Previous engineering consultant experience
  • Five years progressive experience in civil/geotechnical engineering site exploration, laboratory testing, design and analysis
  • Ability to independently lead an engineering project team as discipline lead
  • Ability to work productively in a team environment including other HDR staff, clients, sub-consultants, and construction contractors
  • Strong technical writing, verbal communication, and presentation skills
  • Willingness to travel periodically
  • Experience scoping dam safety, hydrology, and pumped storage engineering projects and developing a narrative scope, detailed budget, and project schedule
  • Ability to multitask and support/lead/manage multiple assignments and projects
  • 3D modeling experience
  • Local candidates are preferred

Qualifications

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering
  • Professional Engineer (PE) license
  • Previous experience in project execution within the Power Market Sector.
  • Computer skills in Microsoft Office as well as standard Power Market Sector design software. (examples include PLS CAD, AutoCAD, Plant 3D, AutoPipe, and Revit)
