Industrial Engineer, Conveyance, Semi

Sparks, Nevada

Employer: Tesla Motors
Industry: Assembly & Production
Salary: Competitive
Job type: Full-Time

Tesla is currently seeking a motivated and accomplished Industrial Engineer to lead the design and analysis for Factory Design material flow projects. This role requires strong industrial engineering fundamentals and the ability to apply first principles thinking to design material handling systems. This role must quantify concept-level layout options, which will necessarily involve working with ambiguous inputs. Ultimately this role works to develop a complete process for line-to-line part flow for dozens of flow paths. This position may be based in Reno/Sparks, NV.
The team is responsible for developing a factory design which supports seamless integration between production, packaging, material flow, supply chain, construction, and facilities teams. Innovation is expected. Through a detailed understanding of the high-level factory objectives and extensive collaboration with the internal and external teams designing individual factory components, this team ensures that the overall factory design achieves all of Tesla's objectives.
The ideal candidate will excel in a demanding and fast-paced environment where they will work as part of a strong, agile, and highly motivated team to accomplish some of the most ambitious projects being attempted in any industry today. The candidate will be able to think at a systems level to design optimal material delivery systems and push for factory layouts most conducive to their designs. The candidate must also be able to make assumptions on modeling inputs based on experience of real-world factors and lessons learned with previous systems. The candidate must have intuition on what tools to use at each stage of the project and whether to use certain tools at all.

Responsibilities
  • Display a positive attitude and practice strong work ethics that reflect the mission, philosophy and goals of Tesla
  • Develop detailed material flow models for new and existing products to project material flow headcount, assess congestion, execute on buffer quantities, and ensure overall feasibility
  • Work closely with manufacturing engineering teams to develop a plan to deliver every part from one production step to the next
  • Fully detail manual solutions while conceptually modeling automated solutions to collaborate with automation design teams on business cases
  • Develop innovative, cost-effective solutions with the packaging team for part presentation, packing density, and sustainability in automated and manual solutions
  • Create 3D dynamic simulation models to design bulk material handling systems in detail while considering all other flows/disruptions that may share its path
  • Work with internal manufacturing engineering teams to ensure that equipment and layout designs align with the overall material flow plan and vision for the factory
  • Own design of layouts for each element of a material handling system
  • Iterate and grow layouts that capture touchpoints across a factory in X, Y, and Z
  • Develop keep-out zones for material handling paths and anticipated equipment while a factory launches utilities and support space

Requirements
  • Degree in Industrial Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering or equivalent experience
  • 2+ years of industrial or manufacturing engineering experience with emphasis on layout and/or material flow (internship experience may be considered)
  • Extensive detailed material flow analysis experience to make data-driven decisions and summarize results for executives
  • Deep understanding of material delivery methods (i.e. powered industrial equipment, automated guided vehicles, conveyor, rail-guided vehicles) and strategies (i.e. forklift-free) and experience with diverse and high throughput material handling challenges
  • Demonstrated leadership and ability to drive projects with diverse teams in a high-volume manufacturing environment
  • Experience quantitatively solving ambiguous factory design problems at a systems level
  • Exemplary verbal and written communication skills
  • Experience with layouts in AutoCAD or Revit
  • Experience with implementing and improving manual and automated handling system
  • Experience working with 3D discrete event simulation software (FlexSim preferred) or in simulation consulting or dedicated simulation internal organizations
