Industrial Engineer II, RMTO

Westborough, Massachusetts

Employer: Amazon
Industry: Hardware Development
Salary: Competitive
Job type: Full-Time

Are you inspired by the invention? Is problem solving through teamwork in your DNA? Do you like the idea of seeing how your work impacts the bigger picture? Answer yes to any of these and you'll fit right in here at Amazon Robotics. We are a smart team of doers that work passionately to apply cutting edge advances in robotics and software to solve real-world challenges that will transform our customers' experiences in ways we can't even image yet. We invent new improvements every day. We are Amazon Robotics and we will give you the tools and assistance you need to invent with us in ways that are rewarding, fulfilling and fun.

The Robotics Manufacturing & Technical Operations (RMTO) organization is Amazon Robotics' manufacturing arm for industrial robotics. We manufacture high-quality robotics for fulfillment and transportation centers across Amazon. It's an operation that works cross-functionally with Engineering and Supply Chain teams. We are seeking a talented Industrial Engineer with thorough knowledge of workflow/process path design, space utilization/efficiency, ergonomics, and system design to support the manufacturing operation in our Westborough, MA facility.

In this role, you will provide technical guidance and support to the manufacturing site leader by designing a system or systems through analyzing process work flows and sequence of operations. You will improve efficiencies in production facilities and equipment layouts; and establish methods for maximum utilization of production facilities and personnel. The company has complex products that requires a detail-oriented, organized, and high-energy individual to produce new, reworked, or even deprecate existing engineering work. The successful candidate for this position will be a self-managing, action-oriented individual focused on developing a high performing system while delivering business results.

Key job responsibilities

• You conduct studies pertaining to cost control, cost reduction, inventory control, and production systems. On the basis of these studies, develop and implement plans and programs for facility modifications and revisions to operating methods.

• You lead the design, implementation, and delivery of large system designs in highly ambiguous and/or significantly complex problem spaces that have a long-term impact on our facility network in multiple regions or even globally.

• Your efforts may produce new, refactor, or even deprecate existing systems. You heavily influence the design and produce critical artifacts (e.g., models, designs, whitepapers, etc.). You make the right trade-offs. The problems you solve are highly complex, but your solutions are as simple as possible.

• You identify and tackle intrinsically hard problems. (e.g., major bottlenecks or existing architectural complexity that slows down or prevents innovation, poses a critical business or security risk, undefined opportunity with potentially high impact, etc.).

• Your designs are noteworthy in some way (e.g., a significant refactor that simplifies or improves architectural quality, enables us to maintain a competitive advantage, offers significant extensibility, performance, scalability, or has a global force multiplier or operational excellence impact). You advocate for the creation of new systems only when it is necessary.

• You deliver artifacts that set the standard in your organization for engineering excellence, from designs to algorithms to implementations. Your personal designs and models are exemplary. Your reviews of other people's designs are instructive and make the overall system-of-systems architecture better.

• You lead and actively participate in design reviews, improving their delivery and aligning the facility toward coherent strategies. You bring clarity and simplicity to complexity, probe assumptions, illuminate pitfalls, and foster shared understanding.

• You are a pragmatic problem solver, applying judgment and experience to balance trade-offs between competing interests. You are flexible, adapting your approach to meet the needs of the team, project, and/or product.

• You actively recruit for Amazon as well as participate in the hiring/interview process.

• You keep abreast of industry trends. You effectively research and benchmark our technology against other competing technology in the industry. You understand that many problems are not essentially new. You help others understand when it is appropriate to create new, versus reuse or extend existing design solutions.
