Pay Range: $118,290 - $182,388 annually
$118,290- $151,932 annually for the TSS.2 level
$142,050 - $182,388 annually for the TSS.3 level

Job Description

We have an opening for an early or mid-careerIndustrial Hygiene/ Industrial Safety Professionalspecializing in Industrial Hygiene (IH) or Industrial Safety (IS) to provide comprehensive support to LLNL programs and operations within our Environmental Safety & Health Directorate (ES&H). These positions will be on one of the Integrated Safety Teams (ISTs) that directly supports the mission work of the Laboratory. Based upon your experience, there will be opportunities to provide safety and environmental support in addition to the industrial hygiene or safety aspects. You will interact with all levels of workers and management to perform your job, including external regulatory agencies.

This position may offer a hybrid schedule, which includes the flexibility to work from home one or moredays per week, after a probationary period. The specifics of the hybrid schedule, including the exact number of days required in the office and virtual work options may vary based on the needs of the team and the organization.

This position will be filled at eitherlevel based on knowledge and related experience as assessed by the hiring team. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if hired at the higher level.

You will
  • Under supervision, provide comprehensive safety and/or industrial hygiene support for one of the Laboratory's directorates to ensure worker safety and compliance with applicable federal, state, local regulations, and DOE orders.
  • Understand IH or IS hazards in your assigned directorate and report regularly to line management on the issues associated with regulatory compliance in the directorate you support.
  • Develop working relationships with line managers and workers in your assigned directorate and maintain field presence to nurture those relationships.
  • Evaluate work activities and work with line management to identify hazards and recommend controls, and observe work being performed to ensure controls are adequate.
  • Conduct health and safety evaluations and inspections of buildings, equipment and apparatus to identify hazards and deficiencies, review collected data, identify trends, and provide recommendations to resolve and prevent recurrence of health & safety (H&S) and occupational exposures.
  • Serve as the program owner of at least one IH/IS program for the institution.
  • Write and review technical reports. Review and evaluate new/changed H&S standards, procedures, engineering drawings, and diagrams for conformance to H&S workplace standards.
  • Investigate accidents/incidents and reports of occupational injury/illness/exposures for possible causes. Prepare documentation and recommend appropriate measures to eliminate or mitigate reoccurrence. Provide emergency response support to incidents on-site.
  • Satisfactorily complete the ESH Professional qualification requirements.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Additional job responsibilities, at the TSS.3 level
  • Independently provide advanced professional support to LLNL directorates.
  • Mentor less experienced Health & Safety personnel.
  • Serve as a program owner for one or more advanced IH/IS Programs for the institution.

Qualifications
  • Ability to secure and maintain a U.S. DOE Q-level security clearance which requires U.S. citizenship.
  • Bachelor's degree or higher in scientific, technical, health and safety, industrial hygiene or related field, or the equivalent level of demonstrated education, skills and experience.
  • Experience providing moderately complex to complex technical guidance, using knowledge of federal regulations and consensus standards, in anticipation, recognition, measurement and control of exposure to physical, chemical, biological, and ergonomic stress factors. Ability to interpret exposure monitoring results and compare to legal standards. Ability to qualify and quantify occupational exposures and devise corrective actions.
  • Experience in industrial, research and development, large science, and/or construction/demolition settings.
  • Broad experience with or comprehensive knowledge of at least two of the following: 1) Conducting safety audits, preparing safety plans and technical reports, and successfully working potential worker safety and compliance issues with program customers and external regulators. 2) Participating in emergency response and investigations of incidents or accidents. 3.) Experience applying incident analysis tools (fault tree, 5-why causal analysis, blue dragon).
  • Experience building strong working relationships and trust with a demanding customer base, a strong customer service ethos, and results driven orientation.
  • Experience working under limited direction and in a team environment with a broad cross-section of people and organizations, managing moderately complex to complex projects, and meeting schedules.
  • Situational awareness, problem solving, decision making, and analytical skills necessary to evaluate, interpret, recommend, and reduce/resolve workplace hazards.
  • Proficient communication, facilitation, collaboration, interpersonal, and conflict resolution skills necessary to effectively explain, direct, present, advise, negotiate, and influence worker, supervisor, and manager decisions/work practices to reduce workplace hazards.

Additional qualifications at the TSS.3 level
  • Advanced experience in two or more of the following: 1) Presenting and communicating complex technical information to management, workers, and regulators. 2) Providing technical direction and leadership to health and safety staff on safety related matters. 3) Reviewing and interpreting new health and safety standards and conducting a gap analysis against existing requirements. 4) Identifying Similar Exposure Groups, collecting and compiling exposure monitoring data, and confirming adequacy of controls.
  • Advanced knowledge of federal regulations and other consensus standards.
  • Experience managing ESH programs and developing and tracking performance metrics.
  • Advanced situational awareness, communication, interpersonal, and conflict resolution skills necessary to collaborate in a team environment for synergy. Present and communicate complex technical information to all levels of management, laboratory personnel, regulatory agencies, and key stakeholders.

Qualifications We Desire
  • Master's degree in Industrial Hygiene, Occupational Safety, or other scientific, technical or health and safety related field.
  • CIH Certification by Board for Global ESH Credentialing and/or CSP Certification by the Board of Certified Safety Professionals.
  • Knowledge of Department of Energy (DOE) Orders.
  • Experience implementing safety programs associated with characterization and demolition of contaminated facilities and impacted sites in both laboratory R&D and industrial settings.
