Responsibilities

The Infection Preventionist is responsible for activities to reduce the risk of infection transmission to patients, visitors, and employees. Key job functions include surveillance of significant infections, the management of critical data and information, guidance and consultation in infection control practice, and the development and provision of infection control education. Computer hardware, appropriate software utilization and critical thinking must be incorporated into daily job functions. The Infection Preventionist has the responsibility to coordinate designated components of the Infection Prevention and Control Program as assigned.
A successful Infection Preventionist will be able to:
• Work as both an autonomous practitioner and a team member.
• Demonstrate basic knowledge and advances his/her infection control education, knowledge, and skills
• Keep current on best practices through evidence-based research, consensus, and guidelines
• Set priorities, manage workload, and meet deadlines
• Communicate effectively and build partnerships with a wide variety of healthcare workers.
• Demonstrate competency

Qualifications

Graduate of an accredited baccalaureate nursing program with successful experience as a Registered Nurse within the previous three years; or bachelor's degree in medical laboratory science, medical technologist, clinical laboratory science, microbiology, biology, epidemiology, or public health; or master degree in applicable health related field.

Direct relevant experience and certification in infection control may substitute for education requirements.

Masters in nursing, public health, or Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) preferred

Additional Qualifications:

Microbiology or hospital clinical lab experience preferred

Public health experience preferred

Experience in infection control within an acute care setting preferred

License or Certification:

Certification in Infection Control is preferred.

If not certified in infection control, must be willing to complete a basic infection prevention and control training course within the first 6 months of hire.

Current license or registration required if applicable to degree e.g. current RN license, medical technologist, medical or clinical laboratory scientist.

Certification in Infection Control (CIC) will be required within three years from hire if not previously certified.

Expected to maintain CIC once achieved.
