Duties

If selected for this position, you will join a well-respected team that is responsible for a full range of IT Specialist duties. Typical work assignments will include:
  • Providing IT customer service and support in troubleshooting, recovering, and resolving recurring software/hardware problems.
  • Managing accounts, network rights and access to systems and equipment.
  • Installing, configuring, and upgrading commonly used hardware and software systems.
  • Assisting in the configuration, installation, and maintenance of networked systems including hubs, routers, switches, bridges, servers, and related hardware.
  • Maintaining telecommunications systems using knowledge of transmission, broadcasting, switching, control and operation of telecommunications systems.
  • Monitoring the functionality, security and integrity of internet services. Managing internet servers.
  • Analyzing policies and procedures to ensure information systems reliability and accessibility and to prevent and defend against unauthorized access to systems, networks and data.

Responsibilities will increase and assignments will become more complex as your training and experience progress.

Qualifications

Basic Requirement: Information Technology (IT)-related experience, obtained through paid or unpaid experience and/or completion of specific, intensive training, demonstrating each of the following competences:
  • Attention to Detail: Is thorough when performing work and conscientious about attending to detail.
  • Customer Service: Works with clients and customers (that is, any individuals who use or receive the services or products that your work until provides, including the general public, individuals who work in the agency, other agencies, or organizations outside the Government) to assess their needs, provide information or assistance, resolve their problems, or satisfy their expectations; knows about available products and services; is committed to providing quality products and services.
  • Oral Communication: Expresses information (for example, ideas or facts) to individuals or groups effectively, taking into account the audience and nature of the information (for example, technical, sensitive, controversial); makes clear and convincing oral presentations; listens to others, attends to nonverbal cues, and respond appropriately.
  • Problem Solving: Identifies problems; determines accuracy and relevance of information; uses sound judgment to generate and evaluate alternatives, and to make recommendations.

AND

GS-11: To be eligible at the GS-11 level, you must meet at least ONE of the following conditions as defined below.

Specialized Experience: One full year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-9 level in Federal service. Examples include: Attention to Detail, Customer Service, Oral Communication, and Problem Solving, and experience performing the following types of duties: providing IT customer support in troubleshooting, recovering, and resolving recurring software/hardware problems; providing user training and assistance on a variety of routine applications; installing and configuring new or modified hardware and operating systems and software; and assisting in network monitoring and management for organization-wide account maintenance and software/hardware updates.

Education: completed a Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree, or 3 full years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a Ph.D in one of the follow fields: computer science, engineering, information science, information systems management, mathematics, operations research, statistics, or technology management, or degree that provided a minimum of 24 semester hours in one or more of the fields identified above and required the development or adaptation of applications, systems, or networks.

Combining Education & Experience: Combinations of successfully completed graduate education and experience may be used to meet total qualification requirements. In order to qualify based on a combination, graduate education must be in excess of 1 full year.

Career Transition Assistance Plan (CTAP)-The CTAP provides eligible surplus and displaced competitive service employees in the Department of Justice with selection priority over other candidates for competitive service vacancies.
