Job Duties

The Virginia Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services is seeking an Infrastructure Support Technician Student Intern to provide frontline support to agency staff for the agency's computers, servers, printers, network and telecommunications. The position will install software; manage infrastructure projects (desktop refresh, upgrades and patching) for agency staff, assist employees and managers with IT procurement issues, maintain the software inventory and provide patching for out-of-scope software. A key responsibility is providing exceptional customer service and communicating professionally with staff, management, vendors, and others. #COVAentryleveljobs #COVAinternship

WORK HOURS: The students' class schedule should permit them to be able to work between 8:30 AM - 5:00 PM with additional hours during school breaks. While there is some flexibility with the work schedule, a standard schedule will be set. The internship will last throughout the school year and will end no later than 6 months following graduation or when the individual is no longer a student.

LOCATION & CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT: The internship will last throughout the year and will end no later than 6 months following graduation, or when the individual is no longer a student. This internship has a flexible schedule, although a standard schedule will be set. The office is in Capitol Square, Downtown Richmond (on the bus route for GRTC & VCU Shuttle). This position is part-time with no benefits & is limited to working an average of 29 hours per week or less with a max of 1500 hours per year. Final candidate must successfully complete a fingerprint-based criminal background check.

Minimum Qualifications

Must be currently enrolled in an information technology or computer related program. Additional qualifications include the demonstrated ability to provide customer service or support to customers and working in a team environment. Familiarity with hardware and software support including installation and configuration of hardware/software, Microsoft Office, peripherals, mobile phones, and printers. Strong organizational, time management, problem solving and multitasking skills. Must have attention to detail, accuracy, and the ability to complete assignments on time. The ability to maintain a positive attitude and work harmoniously with others. Excellent oral and written communication skills with the ability to understand technical information and relay information to others in an effective manner. Ability to occasionally pick up equipment that can weigh up to 25 lbs.

Additional Considerations

Prefer: Knowledge of system administration using Windows Server and related technologies (IIS, DHCP, DNS, Active Directory, Terminal Services), and scripting tools and knowledge of the purchase of IT goods and services are preferred.

These positions are paid by the hour and are limited to working no more than 1500 hours per year starting each May. They do not include state benefits.
