Job Description

SCOPE OF POSITION
The pharmacy technician, working under the supervision and instruction of a licensed pharmacist, performs procedures and duties relating to the service's Scope of Care. This can include preparation of both sterile and non-sterile medication dosage forms (including chemotherapy), automated dispensing functions, purchasing activities and special project assignments. For successful job performance, the pharmacy technician should be flexible and show keen attention to detail exhibit initiative and be willing to work as part of a team. In addition, this individual should be cooperative and willing to cross train to fill in for other employees as necessary. The technician must be able to provide services as appropriate (under the direct supervision of a pharmacist) to meet the needs of neonate, infant, pediatric, adolescent, adult and geriatric patient age groups served at Wilson Pharmacy facilities.
Skills/functionalities/assignments performed by the Infusion Pharmacy technician can include, but aren't limited to:
Prepare infusion therapy using proper aseptic technique
Chemotherapy Service Preparation Skills/Functions
Automated Dispensing System Administrative Support
Controlled Substance Handling/Dispensing Processes
Materials Management Functions
Specialty Compounding Functions
Maintain the IV and supply area according to policy and procedures.
Order Entry Functions for enterals and supplies

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
This individual should possess basic math and typing skills and must possess attention to detail and the ability to read and follow written instructions. The pharmacy technician should possess the ability to complete minimal computer functions.
Institutional pharmacy experience is highly desirable, while retail pharmacy experience may be beneficial. General institutional/health care experience may be helpful in the training of a pharmacy technician. Preference will be given to trained institutional pharmacy technicians, those individuals who have completed pharmacy technician training courses and/or those who have obtained (national) Certified Pharmacy Technician status. Infusion technicians must have obtained (national) Certified Pharmacy Technician status.
Technicians will have to pass IV Admixture competency and pharmacy mathematics exam upon hire and every 6 months thereafter.
Tennessee Board of Pharmacy requires that all person ordering and handling medications be registered with the Board of Pharmacy/State of Tennessee as technicians.
