General Description
Provides classroom and environmental supports, under the direction of a special education teacher, to students with Individualized Education Programs (IEP) served in general and special education locations . Performs routine clerical and instructional assignments within established procedures and standard practices. Contacts are made within and outside the department; Requires professional ethics in the handling of confidential student and family information. Each Instructional Assistant will have a specific set of work assignments, as directed by the special education teacher, specific to meeting the needs of students as indicated in the child's IEP.

Physical Demands :
The physical demands described are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to use hands to handle or feel objects, printed materials and/or controls; reach with hands and arms; and talk or hear. The employee is occasionally required to stand, walk, sit, climb, balance, stoop, and kneel. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, and the ability to adjust focus.
Work Environment :
While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly works in the Chesterfield Juvenile Detention Home.. The noise level in the work environment is quiet to moderate.
Qualifications
Some knowledge of childhood growth and development, behavior management techniques and clerical procedures. Some knowledge of general academic subjects sufficient to teach others. Demonstrated ability to supervise children in the absence of a supervisor. Demonstrated ability to perform basic clerical tasks, communicate effectively orally and in writing, and ability to follow oral and written instructions. Demonstrated ability to work well with students, staff, and parents in a professional manner.
Requirements
High School diploma, training, or experience sufficient to demonstrate the required knowledge, skills, and abilities. Position requires current First Aid/CPR /AED certification. Individuals must attend provided training and renew as mandated. Assignment placement may require additional training requirements such as and/or specific training on aspects of Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD).

Essential Job Functions
- Assists teachers with classroom duties, including, but not limited to recording grades, preparing instructional materials, providing small-group instruction, and administering instructional/testing accommodations.
- Assists students with academic subjects; one-to-one, small group, or whole class support.
- Works with students under the direction of teacher(s) and related services providers, as appropriate, to implement the child's IEP.
- Participates in trainings and implementing support for students
- Implements accommodations in a child's IEP as directed.
- Provides clerical assistance - including typing, filing, maintaining records, attendance, ordering supplies and materials.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
