Instructor, English Composition/Professional and Technical Writing (Tenure track)

Overview:

The Humanities and Sciences Division at Cincinnati State Technical and Community College invites applications for a full-time, tenure-track teaching position in English with a specialty in Technical and/or Professional Writing. This is a teaching-oriented position rather than a research-oriented position. The successful candidate will teach college-level business, technical, and professional writing courses to students in technical, transfer degree, and non-degree programs.

As part of our team of highly qualified faculty, English faculty are expected to provide high-quality instruction, work with our faculty and Administrative staff to improve student learning experiences and be committed to the mission and values of the College.

General Responsibilities:

• Serve as an instructor for in-class lecture, hybrid, and/or online instruction for a range of courses, including but not limited to Technical Writing, Business Writing, Technical Communications, and English Composition

• Participate in English curriculum design, development, and review.

• Support the mission of the College, Division and Department.

• Engage in committee work and College-wide service.

• Engage in professional development to stay up-to-date on the latest effective teaching practices and procedures.

• Be available to teach day or evening classes at Cincinnati State's main campus in Clifton, as well as satellite campuses located in Harrison, Hamilton, and Butler Counties.

• Fulfill other responsibilities of tenure-track faculty members.

• Other duties as assigned

Specific Duties:

• Deliver learner-centered instruction by establishing a classroom environment conducive to learning, student involvement, and student success, and by providing timely feedback to students.

• Provide students with syllabi that outline student learning outcomes, clear course expectations, evaluations, topical outlines, and schedules that follow departmental and divisional standards.

• Prepare all course materials and lessons.

• Develop real-life learning activities that align with the learning outcomes defined in the Department's standardized syllabi.

• Communicate effectively with students and distribute relevant course material in a timely manner.

• Participate in new initiatives as needed to enhance the student's understanding of course material and assist in increasing student retention.

• Establish and maintain transfer compliance under Ohio Department of Higher Education rules.

• Support adjunct faculty as course-keeper for selected courses

• Serve on department, division, and college committees and participate in college governance.

• Submit student grades and administrative reports and conduct other required record-keeping in a thorough and timely manner.

• Maintain office hours in accordance with College and Divisional policy.

• Attend College, Departmental, and Divisional meetings.

Minimum Qualifications:

• Master's degree in Business, Technical, or Professional Writing; Master's degree in English with a Professional Writing Certificate or cohesive set of 18 graduate hours in Professional Writing/Communication; or Master's degree in English with demonstrated success teaching or working in the field of Technical/Professional Writing

• College-level teaching experience at a regionally accredited institution or its equivalent. Experience as a teaching or graduate assistant does not meet this qualification.

Preferred Qualifications:

• 3 years' experience teaching in a two-year technical or community college.

• 3 years' demonstrated success working in the field of Technical/Professional Communication

• Experience teaching and developing online instruction.

Desired Competencies:

• Experience with or ability to learn and use the College's Learning Management System (i.e. Blackboard or something similar).

• Proven success in addressing the needs of students from diverse cultures, ethnic backgrounds and students with disabilities.

• Ability to work in a diverse work environment.

• Commitment to student academic success and the continued improvement of instruction.

• Ability to use a computer and relevant academic software.

• Ability to interact and communicate effectively with a diverse, professional community, and student population.

• Strong organizational and planning skills.
