Instructor/Assistant Professor, College of Nursing; Advanced Practice Provider, Pediatric Palliative Care

Responsibilities for this role include 95% clinical practice assignment which includes: Planning and directing the delivery of healthcare to the Pediatric population with the need for care by the Palliative Care team. The incumbent will provide care, support, and health education for patients and their families in collaboration with the Palliative Care team. In addition, 5% educational responsibilities in the College of Nursing will be determined in collaboration with Department Chair and Director of Advanced Practice.

Clinical responsibilities will include but not be limited to:

  • Perform palliative care consultations, create multidisciplinary care plans, facilitate care conferences, aid in provision of anticipatory guidance, and assist families with complex medical decision making.
  • Assist in triaging team phone calls when needed.
  • Provide bereavement support for palliative care service with grief support to families and staff, facilitative of post-mortem autopsy reviews, outreach calls, provision of support materials, and assistance in locating grief and bereavement resources within the community. Notify relevant inpatient and outpatient teams about patient deaths.
  • Participate in education sessions for hospice and palliative medicine fellows during their clinical rotations on occasion.
  • Offer palliative care education for nurse practitioner students or nurse practitioners in other programs.
  • Participate in scholarly activities in collaboration with palliative care team.


Basic Qualifications:

  • Earned Master's degree or higher in a nursing specialty from an accredited university required. Doctor of Nursing Practice degree preferred.
  • Current DEA certification, and m ust be certified in Basic Cardiac Life Support.
  • Unencumbered licensure as a registered nurse (RN) and advanced practice registered nurse (APRN) in Tennessee or eligibility to obtain licensure in Tennessee required.
  • Current certification as a Pediatric Nurse Practitioner in Primary and/or Acute Care required.
  • Academic rank is based upon academic credentials.


Departmental Preferences:

  • Doctor of Nursing Practice degree preferred.
  • Three years of clinical practice experience at the RN level.
  • Experience in the role of an APRN preferred.
