Are you ready to join a growing team? Hospital Maintenance is seeking an Instrument and Control Technician to join our dynamic team. In this role, you will be responsible for maintaining, repairing, and installing HVAC, chiller, and boiler control systems. You will work with various control systems, including pneumatic, electrical, electronic, and digital systems, ensuring everything operates efficiently and meets standards. You will play a key role in maintaining systems that directly impact patient care and hospital operations.

Key Responsibilities:

Instrumentation & Control:
  • Evaluate, selects, and applies instrumentation and control techniques.
  • Devises new solutions to technical challenges.
  • Prepares and modifies technical drawings, specifications, and calculations.
  • Monitors work to ensure compliance with codes, engineering practices, and UAB standards.

Maintenance & Repair:
  • Performs routine and preventive maintenance on HVAC, chiller, and boiler control systems, including pneumatic, electrical, electronic, and direct digital controls.
  • Maintains, repairs, and modifies light and heavy-duty heating, ventilation, air conditioning, and refrigeration equipment for existing and renovated facilities.
  • Conducts tests, calibrations, evaluations, and repairs on various control systems.

Technical Collaboration:
  • Works closely with architects, engineers, energy managers, and building occupants to address requests related to testing, evaluating, calibrating, and documenting mechanical and electrical controls.
  • Provides technical direction and consultation to internal staff, including HVAC Mechanics, Electricians, and Central Plant Mechanics.
  • Leads technical projects and assumes responsibility for project outcomes.

Project Management:
  • Produces progress reports and manages project schedules.
  • Plans, conducts, and coordinates technical work and projects.
  • Assists in the selection of personnel for specific projects.

Documentation & Compliance:
  • Analyzes reports, maps, drawings, and tests to plan and execute work.
  • Reviews construction documents to ensure adherence to UAB standards.
  • Monitors bid analyses and provides recommendations.

Continuous Improvement:
  • Stays updated on technological advancements in the field.
  • Recommends improvements to enhance system performance and efficiency.
  • Attends departmental and safety meetings to stay informed and compliant with safety protocols.



Work Schedule: Incumbent must have flexibility due to on-call requirements. Position is designated as essential personnel. Essential personnel are required to work during emergency situations, such as inclement weather, regardless of the University's closure. Employees should be prepared to travel to work during inclement weather, emphasizing the importance of their role in critical situations.



Pay Range: $25.25 - $35.50 (Starting rates are based on our Compensation Guidelines, taking into consideration total relevant, verifiable experience (UAB/UAB Medicine and outside experience), grade minimum, internal equity, and pay ranges).

Qualifications

Graduate from an approved accredited post-secondary two (2) year vocational or technical school in Electronic, HVAC, or Electrical, OR certification from National Institute for Certification in Engineering Technologies (NICET) and six (6) years' experience in building automation, electronic or industrial controls required. Work experience may substitute for education requirement.

Driving record should meet University underwriting guidelines to drive vehicle in performance of University business. Current underwriting guidelines include possession a valid driver's license, issued in the United States; at least 21 years of age; at least three years of driving experience; maintain an acceptable Motor Vehicle Record (MVR).

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:

• Ability to use industrial programmable logic controls or industrial distributed control systems

• Ability to use control system components in a system

• Ability to calibrate analog input transmitters using a decade box and multi-meter

• Knowledge of the sequence of operation to control a valve operator

• Knowledge of analog/digital output and input terminations for a controller

• Knowledge and experience with trades mathematics, trades communications, electronics, pneumatic, electronic and electric HVAC controls

• Strong problem-solving skills with the ability to work independently.

• Knowledge of instrumentation design and engineering techniques

• Ability to read and interpret blueprints, drawings, and technical specifications.

• CAD skills

• Commitment to safety and compliance with regulatory standards.

• Proven experience in maintaining and troubleshooting HVAC, chiller, and boiler control systems.

• Ability to use personal computer, related software and familiarity with industrial computer systems, motor control.

• PLCs and DCSs

• Ability to read/produce electrical schematics

• Knowledge of ISA Standards and TCP/IP and RS232 communication experience as applied to interfacing equipment

• Ability to source and specify controls hardware with experience in selecting and specifying instrumentation and sensors
  • Possess the necessary physical requirements, with or without the aid of mechanical devices, to safely perform the duties and responsibilities of this position to include:

o Lifting and carrying a minimum of fifty (50) pounds

o Climbing stairs, ladders and scaffolding, and working at heights above thirty (30) feet

o Perform tasks requiring bending, standing long periods of time, stooping, kneeling, and walking significant distances between and within buildings on campus

o Working in confined spaces

o Working within extreme temperature ranges
