Intake Research Specialists are considered essential employees. This means you will be expected to work holidays and weekends. Additionally, as an essential employee, you should also be prepared to travel to work even during inclement weather.
This position is designated as "emergency." As an "emergency" employee, you may be expected to report to work during periods of adverse weather conditions or other types of emergency situations when it is announced that an "unscheduled leave policy" is in effect or that federal agencies are closed in your immediate vicinity.

This position will be filled by detail or through temporary promotion. Incumbent selected for this position will be returned to his/her former position or other comparable grade or location after the assignment is completed. If this position is filled through temporary promotion, the selection may be extended or made permanent without further competition. Temporary promotion may be terminated at any time at the discretion of management.
Additional selections may be made from this announcement to fill positions within the same division when the position includes substantially the same duties, responsibilities, and qualifications.

Major Duties
  • Provides investigative support to FBI field offices as well as other government agencies by researching and analyzing information received from the general public, determining the threat level, building a subject profile, and providing that information to the appropriate agency.
  • Receives, analyzes, and disseminates complex information pertaining to potential and actual emergencies and national security situations; initiates appropriate actions and carries out procedures to ensure timely and effective responses.
  • Conducts complex research, analysis, and evaluation of information to assist Special Agents and Intelligence Analysts on investigative case work. Formulates search strategies including FBI and all-source databases, social media platforms, and criminal records.
  • Determines the significance, validity, and reliability of data; identifies patterns and relationships; predicts the potential impact; and develops new or improved approaches to aid in investigative efforts.
  • Manipulates and interprets data regarding a particular subject and analyzes the information to compile a profile of the subject matter. Recommends actions for follow-up analysis.
  • Communicates effectively, both orally and in writing, and prepares and issues investigative reports related to terrorism, investment fraud, kidnapping, bomb threats, hijackings, school shootings, bank robberies, etc.

Specialized Experience (SE):
GS 12: Applicant must possess at least one (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS 11 grade level. SE is defined as follows:
  • Received, assessed, and responded to inquiries from the public, identifying critical elements and employing communication techniques to close information gaps.
  • Provided advanced analytical support in the evaluation of information relating to investigative matters, identifying trends, and assessing the validity, significance, and impact of specific information.
  • Performed quality control/quality assurance checks on reported information and made timely determinations on appropriate follow-up actions.
  • Queried a wide variety of data sources and platforms to collect and examine information relevant to supporting investigative operations.
  • Coordinated the sharing of information and/or investigative products to appropriate sources/personnel, utilizing knowledge of procedural matters in disseminating information.
  • Directed others to accomplish a defined goal or objective, providing guidance on performing specific work functions.
Education
GS 12: Education may not be substituted for specialized experience.
Physical Demands
The work is primarily sedentary, although some slight physical effort may be required. When in a crisis situation, the work can be very stressful and the incumbent may be required to work longer than an eight-hour shift.

  • Relocation expenses will be borne by the selectee, except FBI employees returning from LEGAT assignment. Employees returning from LEGAT assignments must advise the Staffing and Administrative Unit / International Operations Division of their application for this position.

  • Candidates receiving a transfer of physical location, whether at the expense of the FBI or not, will be required to complete a one year commitment to the assignment, prior to moving to a new position at the FBI. The 12-month waiting period begins the day an employee reports for duty at the new location.
  • Employees selected for promotions at the GS-12 level or higher, as well as employees selected for positions where a transfer of location is required, will be processed through the name check program prior to being notified of their selection.
  • Memorandum for Record: Work performed outside assigned duties (that would not normally be documented on a SF-50, i. e., back-up duties), has to be documented in detail by an immediate supervisor in order to receive full credit for amount of time worked in that position. If no documentation is furnished no credit will be given for time worked in that position. The following notations must be specified in the documentation (Memorandum for Record):
a. Percent of time worked in the particular position (cannot conflict with main duties)
b. The month/year work began
c. Frequency worked (i.e., daily, monthly, etc.)
