Duties

  • Performs functions as related to Natural Resources Management, Biological Sciences, Physical Sciences and Social sciences to advise on, administer, and consult with on climate science.
  • Develops, promotes and maintains partnerships to enhance knowledge and best practices on climate change adaptation. Partnerships are developed to enable efficiency and effectiveness in understanding and responding to climate change.
  • Advises and assists in the identification of existing or development of new processes, products, tools, and activities to transfer scientific data and other information into sound, rigorous and effective management decisions and actions.
  • Promotes consistency, transparency and rigor with respect to incorporating climate science information into the planning and decision-making processes of the BLM.

Qualifications

Basic Requirements:

When applying to the 0401 - Natural Resources Specialist (Climate):

A. Degree: biological sciences, agriculture, natural resource management, chemistry, or related disciplines appropriate to the position.

or

B. Combination of education and experience: Courses equivalent to a major, as shown in A above, plus appropriate experience or additional education.

When applying to the 1301 - Physical Scientist (Climate):

A. Degree: physical science, engineering, or mathematics that included 24 semester hours in physical science and/or related engineering science such as mechanics, dynamics, properties of materials, and electronics.

or

B. Combination of education and experience education equivalent to one of the majors shown in A above that included at least 24 semester hours in physical science and/or related engineering science, plus appropriate experience or additional education.

In addition to meeting the education requirement, you must possess one (1) full year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-13 level that is equivalent in difficulty and complexity. Specialized experience is defined as (1) addressing climate change vulnerabilities through management plans, adaptation strategies and decisions; (2) advising, researching, and analyzing existing science and the interrelationships of the environment and society; (3) conducting climate modeling and forecasting to predict future changes to the environment and its effect on natural and cultural resources; (4) assisting in the development of policy, guidelines, and management practices that foster scientific adaptation and sustainability in the context of rapidly changing environmental conditions.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
