Generac's engineering intern/co-op works with other engineers to fulfill special design requests on our products. Working independently or under supervision of senior engineers, the intern/co-op will help designing and testing high power DC-DC converter, DC-AC inverter, develop technical skills through challenging assignments and usage of technical tools. The intern/co-op will help the team solve tough problems and help Generac deliver better solutions to our customers.

This position is based in South Portland, Maine.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Work closely with senior engineers to assess feasibility of advanced innovative DC-DC and DC-AC converter concepts and designs.
  • Design or assist in design of prototype power electronics modules or sub-systems to validate feasibility study.
  • Operate, test and troubleshoot power electronics prototypes.
  • Pre/post processing of test data.
  • Documentation of test procedures and reports.
  • Other duties as assigned.


Minimum Qualifications:

  • Master of Science degree in Electrical Engineering and 2-4 years of relevant work experience in development and deployment of high-performance DC/DC and DC/AC converters.


Preferred Qualifications:

  • PhD degree or enrolled in PhD program in Electrical Engineering with an emphasis in power electronics with minimum 2-4 years of direct experience in power converter development of high-performance DC/AC inverters and DC/DC converters.
  • Prior experience in developing power converters for DC/DC converters, motor drives, uninterruptable power supplies, solar inverters etc.
  • Experienced in designing custom magnetics for power high frequency converters.
  • Experience in modelling and simulation of power electronics converters with tools such as Spice, PLECS and MATLAB/Simulink.
  • Prior experience in EMI evaluation and testing of power converters.
  • High density and high-power PCB layout experience with an emphasis on EMI mitigations. Altium experience is preferred.
  • Experience with test equipment typically used for power converter development such as high-performance oscilloscopes, spectrum analyzers, power analyzers, data acquisition systems etc.
  • Ability to analyze, troubleshoot, design and test complex electronic circuits.
  • Prior experience with advanced DSP processors from TI such as the TMS320F family is desirable.
  • Prior experience with the implementation of Distributed Energy Resources such as Solar/PV Inverters or Wind Turbines is desirable.
  • Grid interconnect requirements experience.
  • Familiarity with third party certification and testing (e.g., NRTL, environmental).


Physical Demands:

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk and hear; and use hands to manipulate objects or controls. The employee is regularly required to stand and walk. On occasion the incumbent may be required to stoop, bend or reach above the shoulders. The employee must occasionally be ready to lift loads as large as 25 pounds. Specific conditions of this job include actions typical of frequent and continuous computer-based work requiring periods of sitting, close vision and ability to adjust focus. This position will require occasional travel, including internationally.
