This position is a hybrid role (3x per week onsite) that will be based at our headquarters in Fremont, California.

The mechanical design engineering intern is responsible for assisting mechanical engineers in an exciting product development environment. The mechanical design engineer intern will use their knowledge and experience to work through the design process and perform analysis of mechanical systems to produce a novel design solution for Nextracker's next generation products. The successful candidate is a creative and innovative thinker, motivated by curiosity.

Here is a glimpse of what you'll do:
  • Contribute to the design and development of the next generations of Nextracker horizontal tracking products
  • Perform engineering work using CAD/CAE software to solve problems in mechanical/structural design, design optimization, prototype generation (such as 3D printing), structural dynamics and kinematics, vibrations, thermal analysis, and production of manufacturing drawings
  • Develop testing fixtures that accurately simulate real world scenarios
  • Perform and document engineering tests
  • Write proposals and technical reports
  • Participate in brainstorming sessions with the mechanical engineering team to identify concepts and designs for future products
  • Own the design of new product component and complete DFM with external suppliers
  • Travel to a project site to observe live construction
Here is some of what you'll need (required):
  • B.S. (in progress) in Mechanical Engineering, Structural Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, or a related field, graduating in Spring 2025.
  • Experience with 3D CAD software, SolidWorks preferred
  • Practical knowledge and hands-on experience with machine shop tools (such as chop saw, band saw, grinders, wrenches, etc.), 3D printers, rapid prototyping processes
  • Must possess solid written and verbal communication skills
  • Self-motivated team player
  • Ability to work within a cross-functional team (systems engineering, electrical engineering, applications engineering, and project engineering) to solve unexpected project challenges
  • Proficient in most common PC based applications (Word, Excel, PPT, etc.)
Here are a few of our preferred experiences:
  • LabView, MATLAB
  • Python or other coding
  • Aptitude and intuition in mechanical failure analysis
  • Passion for solar or renewable energy
