SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory, a multipurpose laboratory for astrophysics, photon science, accelerator and particle physics research, has employment opportunities available for undergraduate students enrolled or planning to enroll in physics or engineering with an interest in rf accelerators, electromagnetics, computational electromagnetics, mathematical physics, rf sources, laser physics, quantum information science (QIS) or advanced manufacturing and seeking to gain work experience. The interns will be part of a growing team at SLAC and Stanford University working to develop these topics. They will assist in the growth of these projects and will perform simulation, data analysis, experimental, design work, develop websites or organize workshops.

Example projects and specific responsibilities include (but not limited) to the following:
  • Participating in design and performing experiments.
  • Perform measurements with network analyzers
  • Operate 3D printers or thin film deposition systems
  • Performing rf measurements
  • Simulation beam dynamics is rf sources
  • Assisting in experimental setups for sources and accelerators
  • Developing and testing electronics
  • Electromagnetic and thermomechanical simulations
  • Programming HPC finite element solvers

Note: This is an hourly, non-benefits eligible casual-nonexempt internship position (working less than 50% full-time equivalent), not to exceed 980 hours in a calendar year. Eligible applicants must be at least 18 years of age, currently enrolled in an educational program or recently graduated, and have US work authorization.

To be successful in this position:
  • Must be currently enrolled or planning to enroll in an educational program or recently graduated in engineering, physics, computer science or related field.
  • Interest in engineering or physics or quantum information science
  • Ability to work both independently and in a team environment, and work and communicate effectively with a scientifically diverse population.
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills.
  • Excellent organizational skills and demonstrated ability to accurately complete detailed work.
  • Demonstrated skills with Microsoft Office Suite such as Word, Excel, Outlook and PowerPoint.

SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory/Stanford University provides pay ranges representing its good faith estimate of what the university reasonably expects to pay for a position.
