This position is expected to start around August 2024 and continue through the entire Fall term (i.e. through December 2024) or into Spring 2025 if available. We ask for a minimum of 12 weeks, full-time and on-site, for most internships.
International Students: If your work authorization is through CPT, please consult your school on your ability to work 40 hours per week before applying. You must be able to work 40 hours per week on-site. Many students will be limited to part-time during the academic year.

Responsibilities

Cell Engineering
  • Tesla is seeking a highly motivated undergraduate and graduate students to contribute to the process improvement for our cutting-edge Tesla Energy Batteries. The Battery is one of the most complex and challenging components designed and manufactured at Tesla. This is an exciting opportunity to join a world-class manufacturing facility for the new 4680 Cells. The candidate for this role will be working with a multi-disciplinary Engineering team to aid support in development and execution of DOEs, CAD modelling, fixturing, troubleshooting of controls, issue analysis, data acquisition, operator training, technical documentation, etc. Daily activities include effectively communicating and acting as a bridge between Engineering and Production to help improve the process.
Manufacturing Engineering
  • The Cell Manufacturing Engineering team at Tesla is looking for a highly-motivated Manufacturing Engineer intern to contribute to the development and ramp of cell manufacturing equipment and processes for our cutting-edge Tesla Energy Batteries. Tesla is a demanding and fast-paced environment where you will work on a critical subsystem of an incredibly exciting product. In addition to developing working on ramping the line the Manufacturing Engineer works with cross-functional teams to test, validate, and rollout equipment to production. The ideal candidate takes pride in his/her hands-on work, analytical ability, organizational skills and attention to detail. He/She appreciates an environment where superior work is encouraged, noticed and rewarded and where individuals carry tremendous responsibility. Tabless Manufacturing Engineering
  • The Cell Manufacturing Engineering, Tabless, implements and scales the manufacturing of the core part of a 4680 form factor battery cell: the jelly roll and its current collectors. In this role, the intern will be working under the mentorship of a senior engineer on developing and testing processes, helping install and ramp new production machines, and troubleshooting issues that affect production runtime and quality targets.
Manufacturing Engineer Mechanical Design
  • The Cell Manufacturing Engineering team at Tesla is looking for a highly motivated Mechanical Design Engineering Intern to contribute to the design, install and ramp of battery cell manufacturing equipment. This is an exciting opportunity to contribute to Tesla's world-class manufacturing facilities. Tesla is a demanding and fast-paced environment where you will work on designing and developing a new generation of leading edge, high speed, ultra-high scale automated manufacturing equipment. In addition to developing automated manufacturing equipment, the Mechanical Design Engineer works with cross-functional teams to test, validate, and roll-out equipment to production. The ideal candidate takes pride in his/her hands-on work, analytical ability, organizational skills, and attention to detail. Pilot Cell Manufacturing Engineering Database
  • The Cell Manufacturing Engineering Team works on Tesla's battery solution, starting from powder, to coating electrodes and ultimately winding them into a cell. In order to test new concepts and gauge their feasibility, the R & D team has access to a scaled-down but production representative version of the electrode and cell assembly equipment. This equipment is managed by the pilot team. The pilot line engineering intern will be an essential part of this team, with hands-on experience on pilot tools and an overall understanding of battery manufacturing process.
Industrial Engineering
  • The Industrial Engineer Intern applies Industrial engineering principles to create, develop and improve manufacturing processes and process flow. • Work alongside the cell manufacturing engineering teams to develop and improve, new equipment and processes, associated with (but not limited to) safety, quality, throughput, and cost.
Cathode AIO Internship
  • At Tesla, we work in an innovative and fast-paced environment that requires the best of our team every day. Cathode dry powder laminating production is currently scaling with new technology creating multiple opportunities to maintain plant ramp plan with high quality material delivery to Slitting. The following is an introductory description of job scope for interns in Cathode at Tesla. Learn and understand the anode and cathode calendaring and laminating process with subject material experts. Assist in data mining and correlation of variables using software programs to help establish future process control limits. Assist with programming control limits and HMI warnings to protect equipment and produce high quality product
Pilot Anode/Cathode Engineering
  • The Cell Manufacturing Engineering Team works on Tesla's battery solution, starting from powder, to coating electrodes and ultimately winding them into a cell. In order to test new concepts and gauge their feasibility, the pilot team at TSD produces smaller sized batches for internal on-site customer. This equipment is managed by the pilot team. The pilot line engineering intern will be an essential part of this team, with hands-on experience on pilot tools and an overall understanding of battery manufacturing process.
Cell Mixing Engineering
  • At Tesla, we work in an innovative and fast-paced environment that requires the best of our team every day. Anode and Cathode dry powder mixing is currently scaling with new technology creating multiple opportunities to maintain plant ramp plan with high quality material delivery to calendaring.
Inline Metrology Systems
  • We are looking for highly motivated candidates who will support development, commissioning, deployment, ramp, and optimization of inline metrology systems for cell manufacturing. The main focus of the activities is to achieve manufacturing readiness for these systems. The candidates will get involved and support various system engineering activities based on their discipline and skillset such as design, fabrication, data processing, data pipeline development, dashboarding, system testing, installation, material characterization, and documentation. You will be working with a cross-functional engineering team.
Powertrain Performance Modeling
  • We are looking for highly motivated candidates who will support development, commissioning, deployment, ramp, and optimization of inline metrology systems for cell manufacturing. The main focus of the activities is to achieve manufacturing readiness for these systems. The candidates will get involved and support various system engineering activities based on their discipline and skillset such as design, fabrication, data processing, data pipeline development, dashboarding, system testing, installation, material characterization, and documentation. Requirements
Please note that the skills listed below are suggestions and not strict prerequisites
  • Currently pursuing a degree in Engineering, preferably Mechanical, Materials, Chemical, Electrical, Aerospace, or a related field
  • Experience with SolidWorks, Catia, CAD/AutoCAD, Revit, 3DX or other 3D modelling software
  • PLC code programming and structure with Siemens, Beckhoff, Rockwell PLC
  • Experience using MATLAB/Simulink for modeling physical systems
  • Knowledge of lithium-ion battery technology and electrochemistry
  • First-principle physics understanding of electrical and mechanical systems, power delivery, energy storage and transformation, and thermo-fluids engineering

      $20.00 - $55.00 + benefits

      Pay offered may vary depending on multiple individualized factors, including market location, job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. The total compensation package for this position may also include other elements dependent on the position offered.
