Internship, Manufacturing Automation Controls Engineering, Powertrain (Winter/Spring 2025)

This position is expected to start around January or February 2025 and continue through the entire Spring term (i.e. through May 2025) or into Spring/Summer 2025 if available. We ask for a minimum of 12 weeks, full-time and on-site, for most internships. Please consider before submitting an application.
International Students: If your work authorization is through CPT, please consult your school on your ability to work 40 hours per week before applying. You must be able to work 40 hours per week on-site. Many students will be limited to part-time during the academic year.

Responsibilities
Tesla is seeking a highly motivated Automation Controls Engineer for our manufacturing facilities in Austin, Reno, and Fremont. The Powertrain Manufacturing Controls team delivers new manufacturing lines to produce new battery packs, drive units and energy products. As an intern, you will work under the guidance of a controls engineer to design and implement machine program functionality on these lines. The Automation Controls Engineer will:

• Program PLCs using ladder logic and structured text (Siemens and Beckhoff)

• Program machinery for material pick-and-place, fastening, dispensing, conveyance, etc.

• Interface machinery with MES and reports results to quality databases

• Create intuitive operator touchscreen interfaces (WinCC, Ignition, TwinCAT HMI)

• Program vision cameras for inspection and 2D/3D machinery guidance (Cognex, Keyence)

• Program and interface to industrial 6-axis robots (Fanuc)

Requirements

• Currently pursuing a degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering or Mechatronics, Computer Science or a related field

• Superb computer skills and demonstrated programming proficiency

• Previous internship, academic or hobbyist experience in mechatronics is an asset

• Hands-on experience fixing and troubleshooting things

• Familiar with common hand tools and diagnostic tools such as multimeters

• Exemplary verbal and written communication skills

• Willing to work extended hours as necessary

Expected Compensation

$20.00 - $50.00, depending on level + benefits

Pay offered may vary depending on multiple individualized factors, including market location, job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. The total compensation package for this position may also include other elements dependent on the position offered.
