Job Description

SUMMARY DESCRIPTION:

Performs technical and administrative support for assistive technology/augmentative communication equipment and services provided in the department of Student Services. The work of the class involves the operation, storage, maintenance and loan management of a variety of alternative & augmentative communication (AAC) devices and assistive technology (AT) equipment and software used by students throughout MCPS. Worker checks equipment in and out, keeps inventory records, and sets up programs and equipment. Provides demonstration of tools and equipment to staff and families as needed. Position is located with the Physical Disabilities Services unit. Incumbent is expected to have the ability to perform the spectrum of technical duties and responsibilities encompassed in this classification as assigned, to learn the operation and use of new equipment as acquired, and to stay current with new technological developments in the area of assistive technology.

CERTIFICATE LICENSE:

Certificate in information technology desirable.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, and ABILITIES:

Knowledge of programming and use of a variety of assistive technology devices and online applications Knowledge of the methods and techniques involved in the inspection, operation, cleaning, control and maintenance of a variety of AAC and AT equipment. Ability to provide information/consultation services and training and to assist in the development of adapted curriculum/instructional materials under the supervision of an assistive technology professional. Ability to work effectively with assistive technology team members, school teams, families, company representatives and members of the community. Ability to operate, inspect, clean, maintain and control a variety of AAC/AT equipment. Ability to learn the technical characteristics and operation of new equipment, applications and technologies. Ability to use computer applications such as word processing, databases, spreadsheets and multi-presentation software. Skill in determining equipment operation problems. Skill in instructing others in the operation and preparation of materials adapted for students with disabilities being supported by an assistive technology team. Good communication and human relation skills. Knowledge of and the ability to meet the seven core competencies of the Supporting Services Professional Growth System (SSPGS).

EDUCATION, TRAINING, and EXPERIENCE:

High School or GED diploma required. Associates degree preferred. Coursework and training in the areas of AAC/AT equipment and experience in programming and operating assistive technology. Experience working with students with disabilities preferred. Other combinations of applicable education, training, and experience which provide the knowledge, abilities, and skills necessary to perform effectively in the position may be considered.
