The IT Support Technician role involves supporting the day-to-day onsite information technology needs of designated departments within the Virginia Tech Transportation Institute with approximately 400+ computers, servers, and end users.

This position will support users with a broad range of technical skill including developers, analysts, researchers, and administrative staff.

Support comprises hands on technical assistance with users' devices and applications and training in the use of VTTI resources like Software Center, compute clusters, Microsoft Teams, and databases.

Common tasks will include installing software for users, provisioning/re-provisioning desktops/laptops, troubleshooting applications, and helping users understand complex problems.

The position will work closely with system administrators and other IT staff in developing and implementing IT policies, responding to security, networking, storage, and other incidents, and improving the quality of IT services.

Because VTTI's research and IT requirements push the boundaries of technology the candidate will need to find solutions to unique problems that require inventive solutions.

A good candidate will be a creative problem solver, have a passion for helping users with technology, and above all have a strong customer experience focus.

Required Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, IT, Engineering or related field. A lesser degree with equivalent education, experience and training may be considered in lieu of a bachelor's degree.

Strong knowledge of Windows operating systems, Microsoft Active Directory and Microsoft 365.

Experience providing support such as one-on-one consultation and training to end users.

Demonstrated ability to work independently, manage multiple projects simultaneously, and take initiative to solve complex IT problems.

Experience with computer hardware troubleshooting and repair. Experience writing user facing documentation.

Must be able to lift up to 40lbs.

Preferred Qualifications

Experience working with inventory software.

Working knowledge of hardware and software video conferencing systems.

Experience with ticketing/work order systems like RT (Best Practical) or Service Now.

Experience with Microsoft System Center components such as; MDT and Software Center, remote desktop software, Microsoft Exchange.

Experience with networking concepts and devices (i,e., TCP/IP, firewalls, VLAN switching, etc.)

Working knowledge of iOS and Android.| Working knowledge of MacOS and Linux.

Experience with SQL compliant databases.

Familiarity with programming languages or supporting software developers.

Experience supporting research computing.

Knowledge of automation techniques and experience with one or more configuration management tools.

Experience with petabyte scale storage systems.
