Job Duties

The Court of Appeals of Virginia is seeking applicants for full-time Judicial Law Clerks to the Honorable Vernida R. Chaney in Alexandria, Virginia.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

Conduct legal research; prepare memorandums analyzing and summarizing appellate briefs and trial records, including transcripts, pleadings, and exhibits; draft court opinions and orders; citation and quote check appellate briefs and judicial opinions; consult and advise the judge and fellow law clerks, operate timer and recorder during oral argument hearings.

Minimum Qualifications

Juris Doctor degree from an ABA-accredited law school. Membership in good standing of the bar of the Supreme Court of Virginia or the highest court of another state. Prior legal, clerkship, or internship experience in criminal, civil, domestic relations, workers' compensation, administrative agency law, and familiarity with the trial and appellate court procedures, systems, and rules utilized in the Commonwealth of Virginia is a plus but not required. Career law clerks are encouraged to apply.

Successful candidates must demonstrate an exceptional work ethic and time-management skills, be highly organized, detail-oriented, self-motivated, and dependable, have a proven ability to digest voluminous materials while meeting critical deadlines and exhibit excellent communication, interpersonal, teamwork attitude, and effective problem-solving skills.

Applicants should demonstrate excellent analytical, writing, and editing skills and a working knowledge of legal research (Lexis/Nexis/Westlaw), Bluebook citations, Microsoft Office, OneDrive, Teams, and online productivity tools.
