Overview:

We are seeking an entry-level Lab and Field Technician who will support a variety of studies being conducted at Oak Ridge National Lab (ORNL)! This position resides in the Biodiversity and Ecosystem Health Group in the Biodiversity and Sustainable Systems Section, Environmental Sciences Division, Biological and Environmental Systems Science Directorate, at Oak Ridge National Laboratory .

As part of our team, you will perform laboratory and field studies, including a range of routine tasks such as assisting with laboratory experiments, sterilizing equipment and glassware, field monitoring operations, recording and maintaining datasets, and ordering and organizing supplies.

Major Duties/Responsibilities:
  • Measuring various parameters in biota, including fish and invertebrates.
  • Processing biota, sediment, and water samples for contaminant analysis.
  • Experimentation with and care of fish in the laboratory.
  • Identifying fish species and managing ichthyological collections.
  • Conducting mercury and methyl mercury analysis.
  • Conducting routine tasks and preparing supplies related to toxicological studies.
  • Assisting with field studies in streams while walking and on reservoirs while in a boat.

Basic Qualifications:
  • An ASdegree in biology, chemistry, fisheries, environmental science or a related field of study.


Preferred Qualifications:
  • Ability to complete tasks fully and accurately.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Motivated self-starter with the ability to work independently and to participate creatively in collaborative teams across the laboratory.
  • Ability to function well in a fast-paced research environment, set priorities to accomplish multiple tasks within deadlines, and adapt to ever changing needs.


Project Hire:

This is a temporary assignment of 18 months with potential for extension.
