The Martin Laboratory in the Department of Pharmacology at the University of Virginia is hiring a Lab and Research Technician 1-2 or a Laboratory Specialist, depending on qualifications and experience of the applicant.

The Martin laboratory uses unbiased genetic screening systems both in vitro and in mouse models to address two main areas:

1) Identifying targetable vulnerabilities in cells harboring genetic alterations in common cancer genes;

2) Understanding how cancer cells adapt to avoid death due to the immune system.

The long-term goal is to use these basic discoveries and translate their findings into therapeutic strategies to improve cancer treatments. The overall goal of our research is to design therapeutic strategies that can specifically block tumor growth directly or by making tumors more susceptible to attack by the immune system. This position represents an exciting opportunity for recent graduates seeking to gain research experience before applying to PhD, MD, or MD-PhD programs

Job Responsibilities Include:
  • Pursue research projects under the direct guidance of the principal investigator to characterize novel anti-cancer drug targets and explore genes involved in tumor immune evasion.
  • Maintaining excellent lab records using digital and traditional lab notebooks.
  • Presenting research findings at lab meetings.
  • Experimental work includes isolation of protein and RNA for western blotting and RNA-seq; Standard molecular biology experiments including cloning of genes and libraries; CRISPR-based genome engineering; Standard tissue culture and genetic screens to explore tumor biology; Mouse tumor modeling; Flow cytometry.
  • General lab duties include ordering and purchasing for the lab using the UVA Marketplace and tasks involved in overall laboratory maintenance, including maintaining a clean workspace and preparing buffers and other reagents.
  • May be asked to perform other duties as assigned.
Preferred Qualifications/Skills/Abilities:
  • Previous lab experience including basic molecular biology skills (PCR, cloning, etc.), Flow cytometry, & western blotting. Experience with cell culture work and mice is an asset.
  • Proficiency with computer software, including Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, and Excel.
  • Ability to work independently and as a team member.
  • Good communication and organizational skills.
  • Flexibility and adaptability to a challenging and fast-paced environment.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

Lab and Research Technician 1

Education: High school diploma or equivalent

Experience: At least 1 year of lab experience, which may include student experience. Bachelor's degree will be considered in lieu of experience.

Lab and Research Technician 2

Education: Associate's degree

Experience: At least 2 years of lab experience which may include student experience. Bachelor's degree in related science will be considered in lieu of experience.

Lab Specialist

Education: Bachelor's degree.

Experience: 3 years of experience. 6 years of lab-related experience accepted in lieu of degree.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

This position can spend extensive periods of time standing and squatting while conducting experiments or caring for animals. Also requires keyboarding and other bench work and animal procedures requiring finer finger manipulation.
