The Department of Neuroscience and the Center for Brain Immunology and Glia at the University of Virginia seeks an enthusiastic laboratory technician (Lab and Research Technician II) to perform and assist with research projects and laboratory management in the Coutinho-Budd laboratory.

The Technician will be responsible for assisting in research related to cellular and molecular mechanisms of glial biology in Drosophila melanogaster. The Coutinho-Budd lab is particularly interested in understanding molecular mechanisms underlying glial function and interactions with nearby neurons and glia in the healthy and diseased nervous system. The research involves a number of techniques and approaches in cell biology, molecular biology, biochemistry, and genetics, including the use of genetically-modified animals combined with brain microdissection, immunohistochemistry, confocal microscopy, PCR and other DNA preparation, Western blots, data analysis, and other techniques as needed. Additional responsibilities include ordering lab supplies, maintaining Drosophila stocks and lab equipment, and helping to train undergraduate students. The position includes opportunities that will result in authorship on academic publications, and the potential to attend and present your work at scientific conferences.

Desired qualifications include a bachelor's degree in Neuroscience or related field, and prior research experience in cell and molecular biology and Drosophila models. High motivation, commitment, attention to detail, and effective organizational and communication skills are essential.

The successful candidate will be expected to:
  • Perform similar duties to the Technician 1, such as performing analyses, participating in research or clinical work involving treatment operations and experiments with animals to include care and feeding, cage cleaning and sanitization, and observation during post-operative or treatment periods, and maintaining equipment and apparatuses.
  • Coordinate and participate in a variety of routine technical duties by providing assistance to clinical and research staff in testing, determinations, and experiments.
  • Assist in evaluating research methods, procedures, and techniques, based on established objectives.
  • Provide basic assistance to researchers in manipulating, computing, and analyzing data using specialized statistical computer software.
  • May perform certain surgical procedures on small lab animals.
  • Assist with training other staff members on procedures; may supervise students or volunteers.
  • Assist Principal Investigators and senior staff in developing new strategies and techniques for experimentation.
  • Technician 2 employees in Social Sciences and Humanities will provide routine, technical, and administrative support to research projects.
  • May contact and coordinate schedules with study subjects, handle information intake, and record and track results.
  • In addition to the above job responsibilities, other duties may be assigned.
Qualified candidates must have:

Education: Associate's degree

Experience: At least 2 years of lab experience which may include student experience. Bachelor's degree in related science will be considered in lieu of experience.
