Job Summary

The Digital Media Commons (DMC) in the James and Anne Duderstadt Center (DC) at the University of Michigan (U-M) is looking for a qualified program coordinator who will maintain the DMC's Design Labs Program. You will manage activities in our Design Labs (dynamic collaborative classrooms); participate in the DMC Student Fellowship Program as a teacher and mentor; and consult with students and faculty members. You will report to the Ground Connections team manager. This is an onsite position, at the Duderstadt Center in Ann Arbor.

We enable new ways to research, teach, learn, create, and explore in a student-centric environment that is interdisciplinary, inclusive, collaborative, and that promotes climate and social justice. The DMC's Ground Connections unit supports multidisciplinary learning and brings students from across the university together to collaborate, design, fabricate, and learn.

The Ground Connections team manages the Groundworks media lab, the Fabrication Underground and the Design Labs. In the Design Labs, students sketch and share ideas they might develop further using the DMC's special studios (Audio, Video, Visualization and Fabrication). Design Lab activities promote collaboration, experimentation, and community engagement.

Responsibilities*
  • Bachelor's Degree or equivalent experience in a creative field
  • One year teaching or instructional support experience
  • Proficiency in written and verbal communication in English
  • Computer design experience in 2D vector design (e.g., Illustrator), CAD, or 3D computer modeling
  • Experience using maker equipment such as sewing machines, cutting machines, and other prototyping tools
  • Meet physical demands of the job to include moving objects typically under 25 pounds
  • Demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion

Required Qualifications*
  • Perform activities to support the daily operations of the Design Labs, including assisting users of the spaces
  • Create/lead activities to attract lab participants (e.g., lead workshops and equipment demonstrations)
  • Reply to in-person, email and telephone inquiries
  • Mentor and supervise student employees in collaboration with the student program manager
  • Develop Design Lab learning materials
  • Maintain/provide content for Ground Connections web pages and/or the DC monthly newsletter
  • Operate and maintain maker equipment including presentation systems, sewing machines, cutting machines, and prototyping tools
  • Manage inventory and make purchasing recommendations
  • Maintain a safe and clean environment to ensure compliance with safety protocols
  • Participate in Ground Connections team meetings and assist in meeting team goals
  • Provide information and statistics for our annual report
  • Perform other related tasks as requested

Work Locations

This position is classified as on-site with work on campus 5 days a week.
