Position Summary

The Laboratory Technician II for the Wastewater section of the Feed and Environmental Water Laboratory (FEWL) plays a vital role in analyzing various water quality attributes and environmental samples to ensure their suitability for use or safe disposal. Responsibilities include conducting a wide range of analyses on waste waters, surface waters, manures, litters, and other samples, managing sample custody and paperwork, preparing samples for analysis, maintaining quality assurance records, and supervising/training lab assistants. Additionally, the role involves managing hazardous waste in accordance with environmental safety guidelines, maintaining lab instruments, and assisting in various laboratory tasks for the efficient operation of FEWL.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and/or Competencies
  • Knowledge of laboratory techniques and standard operating procedures.
  • Skills in general chemistry tasks (reagent preparation, standard preparation, instrument calibration, titration, dilution).
  • Skills to prepare specimens for analysis (drying, grinding, digestion, extraction, and distillation).
  • Skills in math (calculate calibration curves, dilution factors, moisture corrections, and quality control statistics).
  • Ability to use spread sheets and word processors.
  • Skills to operate, maintain, and general repair of various laboratory instruments.
  • Ability to work with other analysts.

  • Standing in front of laboratory bench for several hours a day.

  • Analyze waters, wastes, and feed for various quality attributes and report the results meeting quality control requirements and turn-around time as directed by the FEWL supervisor and program coordinator.

  • Work with the Quality Assurance Manager, Supervisor, Program Coordinator to complete various tasks for proficiency testing in relation to different certification programs and to ensure good quality results.
  • Write standard operating procedures (SOP). Calibrate, repair, and maintain laboratory instruments and equipment.
  • Manage hazardous wastes generated in the labs.

  • Supervise student and temporary lab helpers and best utilizes their time for the benefit of the program.
  • Coordinates with FEWL supervisor on ordering lab supplies.
