Job Description

We have an opening for a Postdoctoral Researcher to independently work on laser-material interactions with emphasis on laser ablation, laser shock physics, and dynamic compression of material. Particular interest will be shown to candidates with hands-on laboratory experience, experience in developing diagnostics for laser shock physics, and advanced analysis of data to validate simulation codes in laser induced shock generation. This position is in the Laser Material Interaction Science group of the Materials Science Division.

In this roleyou will
  • Conduct advanced research related to laser compression of materials.
  • Develop and implement novel diagnostics (i.e. laser velocimetry) to study laser shock physics.
  • Research new tamper materials to enhance laser impulse through materials.
  • Organize, analyze, and present data from research.
  • Convey capabilities and new opportunities to DOE and internal sponsors.
  • Develop and present written analyses and verbal briefings that capture and communicate research results as well as periodic progress reports.
  • Publish research results in peer-reviewed scientific or technical journals and present results at external conferences, seminars and/or technical meetings.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications
  • Ability to secure and maintain a U.S. DOE Q-level security clearance which requires U.S. citizenship.
  • Ph.D. Physics, Material Science, Chemistry, Mechanical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, or related field.
  • Hands on experience in laser induced shock compression of metals.
  • Experience with various laser (CW, ns, ps, and fs), especially high energy short pulse laser systems.
  • Experience working in large laser user facilities.
  • Knowledgeable of laser material interaction at short timescales.
  • Knowledgeable of x-ray effects in materials.
  • Ability to perform as an innovative experimentalist with a broad range of experience in experimental design, techniques, execution, and analysis, and the ability to think broadly and devise innovative solutions to problems to accomplish objectives..
  • Proficient written and verbal communication skills necessary to deliver presentations and prepare written reports, explain technical information, and provide advice to management.
  • Initiative and interpersonal skills including the ability to work both as part of a collaborative, multi-disciplinary team, as well as the ability to produce independent, original work.

Qualifications We Desire
  • Experience in using class 4 lasers, optics layout, and engineering.
  • Experience with hydrodynamic codes to support experimental efforts.
