The Lead Diagnostic Radiologic Technologist (MRI) position is located in the Diagnostic Imaging Service of the Louis A. Johnson VA Medical Center located in Clarksburg, WV.     • The incumbent is responsible for the training of the MSA pertaining to the MRI Section of the Imaging department.
    • The incumbent provides direction to personnel and offers advice and guidance in handling unique problems.
    • Ensures the monitoring of all activities within the MRI section and takes appropriate action as required in order to insure their efficient and effective operation.
    • Regularly sets objectives for self and the department, monitors and evaluates objectives in order to use time effectively.
    • Ensures staff maintains a high level of skill and meets at least the minimum level of continuing education required for certification and/or Iicensure pertaining to the MR section of the department.
    • Coordinate quality improvement activities within the MR imaging section. Recommends areas for review or improvement.
    • Coordinate vacation coverage and break/lunch schedules for the section, assuring adequate staffing is available so that patient care is not compromised
    • The incumbent is responsible for the quality assurance of the image (positioning/label/technique/network information) prior to transmission to the PAC's network. The incumbent maintains the workstations as directed by the manufacturer. Is responsible to ensure that database reconciliations are accomplished on a daily basis.
    • Works with nursing and other clinical supervisors and supports the maintenance of high quality patient care.
    • Recommends action to the Supervisor, with regard to equipment purchases, modifications and construction within the department. Provides technical information when requested. Assists in the planning of new construction projects.
    • Participates in quality assurance/improvement activities and ensure compliance with JC requirements.
    • Participates in the compilation and analysis of data on departmental activities and prepares related reports to the Supervisor.

Work Schedule: Rotating 10 hr shifts.

Pay: Competitive salary and regular salary increases.

Paid Time Off: 37-50 days of annual paid time offer per year (13-26 days of annual leave, 13 days of sick leave, 11 paid Federal holidays per year)

Parental Leave: After 12 months of employment, up to 12 weeks of paid parental leave in connection with the birth, adoption, or foster care placement of a child.

Qualifications

Applicants pending the completion of educational or certification/licensure requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met.

Basic Requirements:
  • United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
  • Certification All applicants must be certified in general radiologic technology by the American Registry of Radiologic Technology, Radiography (ARRT) (R). Advanced ARRT certification is required for assignments that include computed tomography (CT), magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), [or Mammography (M) duties performed independently, as applicable].Advanced certification indicates that the incumbent [can operate independently] and has demonstrated specific clinical competency in the appropriate specialty and taken and passed the designated examination. [In modalities that require advanced certification, to support their continued development, technologists who do not possess an advanced certification may be provided on the job training with oversight from a certified radiologic technologist.]
  • Education. Completion of a full-time training course of at least 24 months in duration (or the equivalent) in a post-high school diagnostic radiologic technology program, evidenced by a certificate or an associate degree, accredited by the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT) or from [other accrediting agencies as recognized by the Department of Education (DOE).]

Grade Requirements

GS 11

Experience:
At least one year of experience equivalent to the next lower grade level (GS-10) directly related to the position being filled that demonstrates the clinical competencies needed to provide services as DRT team leader. The candidate must demonstrate all of the following GS-10 grade level technical KSAs.

  • Knowledge of safety requirements for physical space pertaining to MR imaging area.
  • Ability to establish and monitor access and safety requirements for the physical zones.
  • Ability to develop and ensure that adequate written safety procedures, work instructions, emergency procedures, and operating instructions are issued and enforced.
  • Knowledge of hazards posed by magnetic fields on implants, medical devices, hospital equipment and retained foreign bodies, and the development of measures taken against those hazards.
  • Ability to train medical, technical, nursing and all other relevant staff groups (including ancillary workers) in all procedural aspects related to MR safety.

AND The candidate must demonstrate all of the following GS-11 grade level technical KSAs: and demonstrate the potential to acquire the assignment-specific KSAs designated by an asterisk (*):

  • *Skill in directing on-the-job training for employees.
  • *Ability to evaluate work performance of lower level employees and recommend performance ratings.
  • *Skill in technical planning and oversight to set and adjust work priorities, and [ensure] that work requirements are met based on employee capabilities.
  • Ability to provide care appropriate to the age of the patients served, including knowledge of growth and development.
  • *Knowledge of medical center, VHA, and government-wide human resources management regulations, policies, and procedures.

Preferred Experience: One year of lead experience and MRSO certified.
