HDR is looking for a Lead Electrical/I&C Design Engineer to join our Power program, to be based out of any of the following HDR offices: Charlotte, Raleigh, Charleston (SC), Columbia (SC), or Greenville (SC). This individual will be a key member of HDR's rapidly growing engineering team and will provide day-to-day execution of electrical engineering and design deliverables for power generating facilities, specifically hydro, battery storage, coal fired, simple cycle, combined cycle and microgrid projects. On a day-to-day basis, they will be expected to:

  • Perform engineering work scopes and proposals
  • Prepare detailed design packages for new and modifications to existing power generation facilities
  • Work on a variety of projects which may include relay protection upgrades, plant control system upgrades, excitation, governor, and power system upgrades
  • Perform engineering calculation reports
  • Specify major plant equipment such as generators, oil-filled and dry-type transformers, medium and low voltage motors, switchgear, motor control centers, PLC and DCS control systems
  • Coordinate power plant electrical engineering design effort with other HDR disciplines and project personnel
  • Perform cable, raceway and equipment sizing calculations
  • Execute cable and conduit schedules and routing drawings
  • Develop Input and Output (I/O) List and interface with the plant control system
  • Provide technical leadership with mentorship from senior electrical and I&C engineers
  • Execute review of engineering work deliverables following HDR QA/QC procedures
  • Self-manage projects and tasks assigned and provide status updates as needed


Qualifications

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering or Architectural Engineering with an Electrical emphasis
  • PE license
  • Minimum of 10 years of experience in electrical design for the following: hydroelectric, renewable, fossil power generation facilities or heavy industrial facilities; electrical powerhouse and balance of plant controls and power systems; knowledge of large-scale power generation electrical and control systems (medium and low voltage switchgear and motor control centers, diesel generators, UPS systems, VFD's, PLC's, Excitation and Governor Systems)
  • Ability to produce design drawings including one-lines, three-lines, schematics, general arrangements, connection diagrams, raceway drawings, and bill of materials
  • Occasional travel is required, majority of travel is local (within the Carolinas)
  • Strong computer knowledge of Microsoft Office
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • An attitude and commitment to being an active participant of our employee-owned culture is a must


Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with detailed design for large power generation is highly desirable
  • Prior experience in a consulting engineering environment is highly desirable
  • CADD Software knowledge such as AutoCAD, MicroStation is highly desirable
  • Electrical System Design Software knowledge such as ETAP, SKM, and / or CDEGS is highly desirable
  • Local candidates are preferred
