BRIEF DESCRIPTION:

The purpose of this position is to provide general information services to all city residents and library visitors, answer basic as well as in-depth reference queries using a variety of primary and secondary sources while working at various stations at the Service Desk; provide supervisory oversight when required; and all other duties as assigned to further the mission of the City of Wichita Falls. This position has primary responsibility for original and copy cataloging for all formats and areas in accordance with professional standards and local practices.

OTHER REQUIREMENTS:

MLIS preferred.

Sound working knowledge of department policies and procedures is required in order to manage the library in the absence of the Administrator and/or Assistant Administrators. Some evening and weekend shifts are required.

Experience in working with computers is highly desirable, as is knowledge of MARC and excellent communication and organizational skills.

# Code Essential Functions

1 L Regular and reliable attendance in compliance with given schedules is a mandatory requirement of this position. Schedules may be subject to change with or without advance notice

2 L Provides general reference and information services at service desks by: assisting library users in locating materials, performing reader's advisory, demonstrating knowledge of current literature and the library collection, explaining library policies and procedures, assisting computer users and providing basic instructions, operating and troubleshooting equipment, responding to complaints and/or compliments, checking materials in and out, placing items on request, and collecting fines. Assists with sorting materials, accurately shelving returned materials, and inventories. Conducts tours as needed and delivers presentations about the library and library use to community groups. Maintains good appearance and order of assigned portion of the library stacks. Take routine meeting-room reservations.

3 S Assists in collection development by researching and evaluating materials, ordering assigned fiction genres and assigned-subject nonfiction, monitoring assigned budget areas, and assisting with deselection.

4 S Manages the library in the absence of the Library Administrator and Library Supervisor. Handles meeting room reservation problems. Negotiates and resolves disputes arising from fines and/or fees assessed on overdue accounts, responds promptly to complaints and/or compliments. Collects quotes, price increases, usage stats, etc. as needed for budget process.

5 S Maintain general consistency of library's catalog by accurate uploading and editing MARC records to reflect bibliographical information for items in the library's collection and accurately updating holdings information for said items.

6 S Create original MARC records when necessary following current standards and upload those records to the appropriate shared bibliographical clearinghouses.

7 S Develop knowledge and awareness of current cataloging standards and library practices. Stay informed of future and potential changes to bibliographical information. Advise the Library Administrator and other staff as to how changes to the public library will affect library information.

JOB REQUIREMENTS:
  • Description of Minimum Job Requirements-
Experience-Related Requirements Over two years and up to and including four years.

Vocational/ Educational Preparation Requires Bachelor's degree in engineering or the hard sciences such as architecture, chemistry, geology, biology, mathematics, or physics or a Master's Degree in Liberal Arts or Business.
