Duties

  • Serves as a Shift Leader who is an assistant to the Guard Shift Supervisor.
  • Makes daily assignments to ensure that guard coverage is provided to assigned patrol areas.
  • Instructs employees in specific tasks and job techniques and provides on-the-job training to new employees in accordance with established procedures.
  • Serves as the initial point of contact for the installation's visitors which may include foreign nationals, government agents, elective officials, media and Very Important Persons (VIP).
  • Operates and perform research queries on the National Crime Information Center (NCIC) workstation terminal(s) in accordance with (IAW) federal and state laws.
  • Serves as a member of the installation's overall security response capability during actual or simulated incidents.

  • Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
  • This position requires the incumbent be able to obtain and maintain a determination of eligibility for a Secret security clearance or access for the duration of employment.
  • This position requires the completion of a pre-employment Physical Examination and an annual examination. This position has a requirement to lift up to 50 lbs. in the regular performance of duties.
  • This position is subject to a pre-employment screening, and random testing thereafter.
  • This position has been designated "Mission Essential". Incumbent is required to report to work or remain at work as scheduled to support mission operations.
  • The duties of this position require the incumbent to possess or obtain and maintain a valid state Driver's License in one of the 50 U.S. states or possessions to operate vehicles.
  • This position is subject to the provisions of the Domestic Violence Offender Gun Ban commonly referred to as the Lautenberg Amendment.
  • This position has a Temporary Duty (TDY) or business travel requirement of 25% of the time.
  • This position requires shift work to provide coverage on evenings, weekends, holidays, or special situations.
  • Due to the nature of this position, employees are required to work both planned and unscheduled overtime.
  • The incumbent must be able to obtain and sustain state certification for operating the National Crime Information Center (NCIC) terminals.
  • In accordance with (IAW) Army Regulation (AR) 190-56, requirements of Individual Reliability Program apply.
  • The incumbent must be proficient in the use of assigned firearms/weapons, pass an initial qualification, and must qualify semi-annually thereafter in the use of assigned firearms/weapons.
  • The incumbent must successfully complete security guard training.
  • The incumbent is required to obtain and maintain current certification in cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) techniques and must know First Aid. The incumbent may act as a first responder in a medical emergency.
  • The incumbent may be required to wear chemical protection masks, gloves, and other protective equipment, and may be required to be certified in the use of aerosol irritants and baton.
  • The incumbent will be required to maintain physical conditioning and pass an annual physical agility test (PAT) as outlined in Army Regulation 190-56 "The Army Civilian Police and Security Guard Program".
  • The incumbent must wear the Department of the Army Security Guard (DASG) uniform in accordance with Army Regulation 190-56, maintaining a high state of appearance and hygiene.
  • The incumbent must obtain and maintain applicable certifications in operating various electronic equipment and sensors.
  • This is an obligated position. You will be asked to sign an agreement acknowledging that you are aware of the obligation and willing to be displaced under reduction in force procedures upon the return of the former incumbent.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Competition for Security Guard positions is restricted by law to persons entitled to veterans' preference as long as such applicants are available for appointment. Note: An agency may fill a restricted position with a non-preference eligible by position change (promotion, demotion, or reassignment) from among current permanent Department of the Army employees.

Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes 1) controlling access of vehicles, visitors, and pedestrians into a facility such as a military installation; 2) using automated systems to query and/or verify suitability for visitor entry into a facility such as a military installation; 3) safeguarding personnel, information, and/or property/critical assets in a federal, state, municipal, local, or private protective organization; and 4) leading projects and/or employees. Such experience must have provided a knowledge of protective systems and techniques. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-06).

Time in Grade Requirement: Applicants who have held a General Schedule (GS) position within the last 52 weeks must have 52 weeks of Federal service at the next lower grade or equivalent (GS-06).

  • In accordance with Army Regulation (AR) 190-56, requirements of Individual Reliability Program apply. Incumbent and prospective incumbent of this job are expected to maintain a high standard of conduct; and when being considered for employment and periodically thereafter.
  • The incumbent must be able to perform as a member of the installation's overall security response capability. The duties and training required require for the incumbent to carry and deploy a riot baton, carry a protective shield, and employ non-lethal ammunitions if necessary.
  • Position may be filled as a time-limited promotion, reassignment or change to lower grade not to exceed (NTE) 3 years by a current permanent Army employee. Time-limited promotions may be extended up to a maximum of five years. Time-limited reassignments and changes to lower grade may exceed five years, however return rights may be impacted. Position may be made permanent without further competition.
  • Time-limited reassignments and changes to lower grades can be extended beyond five (5) years if the temporary activity becomes the obligated activity for placement of the employee at the end of the time-limited assignment.
  • When a time-limited promotion is terminated, the Army employee will be returned to the position from which they were temporarily promoted; or, with their consent, to a different position of equivalent grade and pay (AR 690-300/10-8).
  • When a time-limited promotion is to an organization in a different command, the losing and gaining activities must agree to the temporary promotion and decide in advance which activity will assume responsibility for placement of the employee when the temporary promotion ends. If no decision is made, the employee will return to their permanent position of record (AR 690-300/10-8).
