THE DIVISION

DCR's Soil and Water Conservation staff administers nonpoint source pollution control programs required by state law. They include nutrient management, agricultural best management practices, resource management planning, shoreline erosion advice, and the administrative, technical, and financial support of Virginia's 47 soil and water conservation districts.

THE OPPORTUNITY

This position will be responsible for developing and maintaining training curriculum for Soil and Water Conservation District (District) staff as well as new Department staff and will serve as the lead agricultural BMP Engineering Specialist. This position will be responsible for the management and distribution of engineering assistance requests from District staff, ensuring consistent application of program and technical standards and specifications, providing technical assistance and support to Soil and Water Conservation Districts (SWCDs) through design and construction assistance, and performing other duties related to the District Engineering Services Program.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Considerable knowledge of and application of engineering principles for site-specific water quality problems related to agricultural production.
  • Considerable knowledge of construction and survey practices.
  • Experience working with agricultural producers to solve water quality problems related to agricultural activities.
  • Experience providing effective oral and written communications.
  • Ability to work without close supervision.
  • DCR-issued Engineering Job Approval Authority for one or more NRCS Conservation Practice Standards.
Additional Considerations
  • Knowledge of and experience with one or more of the following: environmental sciences, soil sciences, or biological sciences.
  • Experience working with Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) conservation practice standards and experience interacting with state, local, and federal officials.
