We are seeking an individual experienced with and energized by facilitating an updated vision and curriculum for the online undergraduate Information Technology Certificate program. In addition, the successful candidate will periodically teach in the program.

The position opening thus includes two elements:
  • Teaching in a tenure-ineligible part-time, limited term, adjunct Lecturer position for the online undergraduate Information Technology Certificate Program.
  • Filling a "Program Coordinator" role, which is also structured as a semester-by-semester faculty wage (adjunct) contract, but emphasizes work related to updating curriculum, instructional design, and syllabi - in partnership with the existing instructor team and the SCPS certificate team.
As fully described here , the IT Certificate is an 18-credit (6 course) program offered by the University of Virginia's School of Continuing and Professional Studies (SCPS). Notably, the undergraduate certificate courses also support a concentration within the SCPS Bachelor of Interdisciplinary Studies Degree. BIS and IT Certificate students participate side-by-side in the courses. These are continuing education programs that predominantly serve working adult learners.

The online Certificate in Information Technology provides individuals with the knowledge and skills necessary to assume entry-level positions in the field of information technology. Coursework covers the strategic value of IT to businesses and exposes students to the web application development process (topics include IT architecture, systems analysis and design, web design, database systems, and web application development). Upon completion of the Certificate in Information Technology, students are prepared for positions in web design and application development, systems analysis, programming, and business analysis.
    The opening exists for the Spring 2025 term, beginning in January. The program coordination duties and teaching opportunities are typically available in fall, spring, and summer academic semesters.

    Courses are typically 15 weeks in length and are offered in an online asynchronous format. Instructors do hold optional live, synchronous sessions. Class size averages range from approximately 10-20 students.

    Qualifications

    SCPS employs academic faculty who have applicable content expertise at the appropriate level and who provide evidence of recent and/or current professional experience which applies to students' achieving the goals and learning outcomes of the program.

    Bachelor's degree required and a minimum of five years in an IT-related field. Master's or terminal degree in a related field preferred.

    Also required is previous relevant online teaching and instructional design experience (this includes familiarity with the use of technology in teaching, experience working with adult learners, in online instruction, ). Strong written and oral communication skills are highly desirable.
