Job Duties

The mission of the Virginia Department of Corrections Health Services Unit is to strive for excellence in healthcare by supporting and promoting the wellbeing of persons in our custody. Our primary focus is providing quality healthcare while being good stewards of the Commonwealth's resources. The Health Services Unit (HSU) provides leadership, planning and general management of all clinical and administrative activities of the unit within VADOC. This includes the management and allocation of resources and the development of HSU policies and procedures. The HSU is also responsible for ensuring that such policies and procedures comply with appropriate statutes, State policies, ACA standards and other health regulatory requirements and compliance with all Medicaid and Medicare standards.

The purpose of the position is to provide support to the Department in legal work.

Minimum Qualifications

Comprehensive knowledge of legal processes. Strong organizational skills and attention to detail. Superior interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills. Advanced knowledge of the Microsoft Office suite of programs and Adobe. Ability to maintain a high level of professionalism. Ability to maintain confidentiality and exercise good judgment. Comfortable working under pressure and within a tight deadline. Working knowledge of HIPAA and other State and Federal confidentiality regulations. Ability to deal effectively with public officials and executives of public and private agencies. Working knowledge of legal terminology, court procedures, case management systems, and document management systems.

Additional Considerations

Experience in correctional legal work. Experience in a healthcare organization setting.
A bachelor's degree or a paralegal certificate is preferred; however, an equivalent combination of training and experience indicating possession of the required qualifications may substitute for educational criteria.
