This position supports the public services functions of the University Libraries through the effective management of student and staff employees, participation in the reference desk rotation, and customer service, network and user support assistance.
  1. Hire, train, supervise, and schedule student workers to provide user assistance and customer service.
  2. Participate in the reference desk rotation, providing reference assistance to library users.
  3. Participate in service desk rotation (circulation and reserves) and resolve public service issues.
  4. Hire, train, supervise and evaluate Library Specialist(s) and/or staff.
  5. Work with Library Systems (computing and networking) staff to identify and resolve problems in public computing services; may also work with integrated library system (ILS) staff to resolve ILS issues.
  6. Perform other job-related duties as assigned.

The Library Manager (Copy Cataloging) oversees the day-to-day operations of the Resource Description (Copy Cataloging) Unit in the Resource Management and Metadata Department (RMM) of UH Libraries. The Library Manager supervises staff and student assistants, manages various cataloging projects, and classifies library materials in a variety of formats including non-English language resources, electronic resources, and serials/journals.
  • Oversees the day-to-day activities of the Resource Description (Copy Cataloging) Unit and ensures quality control related to copy cataloging and local descriptive practices.
  • Directly supervises staff in the Resource Description (Copy Cataloging) Unit and conducts annual performance evaluations.
  • Hires, trains, supervises, and approves time for student workers.
  • Performs complex copy cataloging and call number assignment for a variety of formats, including print and electronic resources.
  • Coordinates the development, maintenance, and documentation of norms, best practices, and workflows for copy cataloging in collaboration with the Head of RMM.
  • Oversees project management for copy cataloging activities, including batch editing, processing, and uploading of bibliographic data to the catalog.
  • Regularly reviews the Alma authority control task list and coordinates local authority creation and maintenance with the Head of RMM and the Library Platform Manager.
  • Works closely with stakeholders and managers throughout the Libraries to coordinate cross-departmental workflows.

Qualifications

Associates and 3 years experience

Requires the ability and knowledge for analysis and interpretation of procedures, policies and practices attainable through specific education and/or training programs in a specialty or technical field. Advanced vocational or electronic skills or a basic knowledge of a professional field is required. An Associate's degree or certification/licensing in a technical specialty program of over 18 months and up to 3 years duration are characteristic of this field. Requires a minimum of three (3) years of directly job-related experience.

Required Qualifications Specific to This Position:
  • Experience performing copy or original cataloging for various library materials while adhering to current descriptive standards, local cataloging practices, with the ability to use independent judgement as needed.
  • Experience using an integrated library system or platform (ILS/LMP), such as Ex Libris Alma, Voyager, III Sierra, SirsiDynix, etc.
  • Knowledge of Resource Description and Access (RDA), MAchine Readable Cataloging (MARC), Library of Congress Classification (LCC) and subject headings (LCSH), and related vocabularies and schema.
  • Ability to work both independently and collaboratively with colleagues.

Preferred Qualifications Specific to This Position:
  • Experience performing original cataloging in a MARC-21 environment using metadata schema such as Original RDA or Official RDA.
  • Experience using OCLC products such as Connexion Client, WorldShare, and WorldCat.
  • Interest in learning data transformation tools such as MarcEdit, OpenRefine, etc.
  • Supervision and/or team leadership experience
