Primary Purpose of Position
The primary purpose of the Library Security Officer is to maintain security in the library during the overnight hours that the building is open. This position works closely with the Library Security team, the Safety and Disaster Response Committee, and library units as well as campus police, fire safety, environmental health and safety, and emergency management. The library's security program encompasses the library's security guards, video surveillance equipment, card access, and intrusion alarms. This position provides daily building patrol services for the library. Serves as responder for building fire alarms, facilities disasters & medical emergencies. The Library Security Officer reports directly to the Library Security Coordinator.
Minimum Education/Experience
Required Minimum Qualifications:
High School diploma or equivalency and demonstrated possession of the competencies necessary to perform the work. Some positions may require valid N.C. driver's license.

Essential Job Duties
  • Patrols and monitors the facility for situations that might endanger the safety and security of patrons, collections, and equipment.
  • Maintains ongoing competency with security alarms, fire panels, video surveillance, alarm monitoring system, and door alarms.
  • Reports daily to Library Security Coordinator on security-related issues and maintains logs of shift activities as well as "Lost and Found".
  • Uses email, phone, and radio communications between Library Security Office and Campus Police.
  • Initiates emergency procedures when appropriate and assists with the implementation of these procedures as instructed.
  • Regular physical activity (i.e. hourly patrols of the building, walking up flights of stairs in the case of an emergency)

  • Stays current on methods/practices, knowledge, and skills in all job competencies.



Departmental Preferred Experience, Skills, Training/Education
  • High School diploma.
  • At least one year of experience in security enforcement or protection work.
  • Good interpersonal and communication skills are essential.
  • Ability to work independently is essential.
Necessary Licenses or Certifications
Valid N.C. driver's license.
